Bad Iran Deal

The (Continuing) Islamic Revolution of 1979, by Katherine Daigle, 9/16/15
Since the Islamic Revolution of 1979, Iran has been a wary, untrustworthy, hostile regime toward the U.S., Israel, and the free world in general. One of the worst calamities that can be imagined in modern times is a scenario in which this fundamentalist state should come to acquire nuclear weapons. Great effort has been undertaken to prevent this disaster, effort which has begun with the understanding that Iran cannot be taken at its word and can only be trusted to do what is best for its own accumulation of power. Yet somehow, as a result of highly questionable negotiation and leadership by the Obama administration, a deal has been reached with this dangerous nation that could result in the undoing of so much hard work and the realization of an unthinkable fear.

The agreement with Iran is absurd. Ostensibly aimed at preventing the country from gaining nuclear weapons, it seeks to accomplish this goal by giving almost total control of inspections and oversight of the handling of fissile materials to the very people who are suspect. Iran can essentially arrange its own inspections, say everything is in order, and little recourse exists to officially question their assertions. And in return for this “concession”, Iran enjoys wide-ranging easement of economic sanctions that had rightly been levied against it for its provocative attempts at nuclear development. This will result in a financial boom for the Iranian government – which will serve only to help, not hinder, its evil ambitions.
That the United States would strike such a deal like this is evidence of diplomatic failure, but perhaps more importantly, of a flat disregard for our obligations to our close friend and ally in that region – Israel. That nation and the Jewish people around the world have worked tirelessly to ensure Israel’s continued survival in the face of decades of danger from Islamic extremists, only to be betrayed now by the United States reaching and supporting this agreement. It is nothing short of shameful that the US would back a deal of this sort.
It is time for the US to become truly serious about helping Israel in its noble goals, and take a principled stand against Iran’s blatant efforts to build nuclear weapons – weapons that could well ultimately be used against the Jewish people who wish only to live in their home.
