Education Costs Unsustainable

A BILL to amend the Georgia Constitution – which has allowed the Board of Regents of the USG “exclusive authority” to do what they want with over $8 billion (we heard now $12 billion) in annual allocations for “education” is critical.

There is NO oversight by Governor Deal, the Senate or House Higher Education Committees or even the Appropriations Committee! In response to the recent egregious USG presidential salaries, Chancellor Huckaby said in a prepared statement: “Higher education has become a competitive market for leaders, we compete for the best, and we want to keep them.” What about the critical need for the “best” faculty, staff and students and Georgia’s need to “keep them” as well, Chancellor Huckaby?

The Board of Regents of the USG has increased tuition almost 65% in the past ten years, essentially frozen USG faculty and staff salaries and, as of 31 August 2015, closed the Student Support Services Offices (initially funded by federal grants) using the excuse of “budget cuts,” while their own salaries continue to dramatically increase. Two USG presidents now receive salaries of over $1 million annually! Former Middle Georgia State University President David Bell’s salary for 2010-2014 was $1,599,375.92 with three of those years as a part-time professor allegedly teaching only one class each semester and paid $761,706.97!
