Excessive Advertising Suspect

The purpose of advertising is to increase or create demand for one brand name over another or to introduce an entirely new product or model.  Products and services that have a continual and natural demand are not so heavily advertised.  It is easy to spot excessive advertising on TV.
When I see an inordinate number of ads for anything, I suspect it is overpriced or may be otherwise a bad deal.   There were continual ads for mortgages just before the 2008 Meltdown, because these mortgages were being approved for unqualified borrowers. There are lots of ads for Gold and Silver, but their costs exceed the per ounce costs for Gold and Silver.  There are also lots of ads for drugs for all sorts of things. Most of the ads on TV are for all sorts of drugs,   The new, continual ads for “reverse mortgages” is contrary to the value of having your house paid for and living debt-free. There are lots of “cancer treatment” ads, but I suspect this is the same overpriced lethal chemo and radiation that decimates our immune system. Ads for car insurance have been excessive for some time. We use a well-established insurance carrier who doesn’t advertise.

I have the same suspicions about organizations that have lots of “public relations” costs. It makes me wonder what they’re hiding or what attacks they are expecting. Government entities appear to be consumed by their own propaganda machines and that should make us even more suspicious.
