What Students Need to Know

Pre-schoolers need to learn language, numbers and letters and be read to and encouraged to read. They should know simple addition and how to read simple words. They need to know how to write their names and simple words

 

K-3 students need to learn to read and understand what they read. They need to learn math including addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. They need to know how to write more complex words and sentences.

 

Students in grades 4-8 need to learn to read everything and need to understand what they read.  They need to learn math including fractions, decimals, ratios, formulas, geometry, trigonometry and algebra. They need to know how to write clearly using correct spelling and punctuation.

 

8^th grade graduates need to understand money and how much things cost. They need to know how to do chores. They need to understand basic science and computer operation, plus human history and economics based on how people lived and supported themselves.

 

12^th grade graduates need to know how to function as an adult. They need work experience. They need to understand applied science, chemistry, physics, electronics, metallurgy and biology. They need to know human history and economics based on the advances made by science from the middle ages through the industrial revolution. They need to understand the US government functions and how to do their own taxes and create their own budgets. They need to understand US law. They need to become self-learners and how to do their own research. They are eligible to vote at age 18 and need to know enough economics and US history to function as informed voters. They need common sense and good judgement. They need to know the law of supply and demand and its effect on prices.

 

College education needs to prepare students for a profession that suits them and reflects their motivated abilities. This could require lots of testing and counseling before students enter college.

 

For some, college will include preparatory courses for careers in medicine, law, engineering and business.

 

For others, college will include courses to prepare for certification in construction, electrical, plumbing, auto repair, HVAC installation, welding, machining and assembly.
