Unnecessary Corporate Welfare

AJC 6/22/18 page M1 Metro article “City developers get $16M in abatements” reports city and county governments are paying incentives to developers for “economic development”. Abatements exempt property owners from paying property taxes. Tax subsidies went to build and renovate apartment buildings, who targeted potential renters who earned 60% to 80% of “median income”. The article included the objection to “tax holiday” abatements by Invest Atlanta Board Member, Julien Bene.

Cities have no obligation to provide low-income housing or bribe companies to locate in their cities. The only “tax holidays” that make sense are those decided by the voters in rural cities and counties to get a manufacturing plant to locate to their city or county.

Developers who want to build apartments, office space, restaurants, stadiums, concert venues, recreation facilities and retail space should not be getting tax incentives unless voters approve these in ballot votes.
