The World According to Thumper

Thumper was the rabbit in the 1942 cartoon movie “Bambi”. His famous line, “If you can’t say anything nice, you shouldn’t say anything at all” launched political correctness as a religion.

Parents were diligently trying to teach their children to be polite and I’m sure this harmless line in a cartoon movie was never seen as malevolent, but it was.  There was no character in Bambi who said “If it isn’t true, it isn’t worth saying”.

In 1942, governments were busy manipulating their populations to jump on the bandwagon to win the war. Part of that was the work done by Psychologists looking to fine-tune strategies to manipulate the public. They moved on after 1945 to bring their schemes to advertising agencies and media companies. They were followers of BF Skinner who introduced “operant conditioning”.
