West Virginia has
considerable natural resources in coal in 28 of 30 Counties with 117 Coal mines
and natural gas. GDP was $77 billion with a population of 1.9 million in 2017
in a land area of 24,038 square miles.
West Virginia ranked fifth among the states in total energy
production in 2016, accounting for 4.5% of the nation's total.
In 2017, West Virginia was the second largest coal producer in
the nation after Wyoming, and accounted for 11% of U.S. total coal
production.
In 2016, two-thirds of the 80 million short tons of coal mined
in West Virginia was consumed in the United States, and the other one-third was
exported to foreign markets.
Coal-fired electric power plants accounted for 93% of West
Virginia's net electricity generation in 2017, renewable energy
resources—primarily hydroelectric power and wind energy—contributed about 4.6%,
and natural gas provided 2.2%.
In 2017, West Virginia was the seventh-largest natural
gas-producing state in the nation, with an output of 1.6 trillion cubic feet of
natural gas.
