Party Dominance by State


In 21 states, there are both Republican governors and Republican majority legislatures. Democrats have full state control in 14 states. The other 15 states are split.

In all 50 States, there are 7383 seats. This includes 4121 Republicans, 3123 Democrats and 139 in other parties. Republicans comprise 55.8% Democrat representation is 42.3%.

In State Houses there are 2986 Republicans and 2314 Democrats.  In State Senates there are 1135 Republicans and 809 Democrats.

28 States with Republican governors include Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Mississippi, Missouri, Nevada, Nebraska, New Hampshire, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Vermont, West Virginia and Wyoming.

21 States with Democrat governors include: California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Hawaii, Kansas, Illinois, Louisiana, Maine, Minnesota, Montana, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Virginia, Washington, Wisconsin,
Democrat gains include: Maine, Connecticut, Colorado, Illinois, Nevada, New Mexico and Kansas.

1 State with an Independent governor is Alaska.
