US Deserts


The US Land Mass is 3.979 million square miles. The US government owns about 1.114 million square miles or 28% of the US land mass. The desert portions total 93,600 square miles.

The Mojave Desert in the US is 54,000 square miles. It is an arid rain-shadow desert and the driest desert in North America. It is in the southwestern United States, primarily within southeastern California and southern Nevada, and it occupies 47,877 square miles. Very small areas also extend into Utah and Arizona.

The Sonoran Desert in the US is 39,600 square miles
Sonoran Desert, also called Desierto de Altar, arid region covering 120,000 square miles in southwestern Arizona and southeastern California, U.S., and including much of the Mexican state of Baja California Sur, part of Baja California state, and the western half of the state of Sonora. Subdivisions of the hot, dry region include the Colorado and Yuma deserts.
