Afghanistan Economy


The population of Afghanistan is 37 million with land area of 251,830 square miles. Labor force is 8.5 million. Labor force by occupation is agriculture 44%, industry 18%, services 38%. Poverty 36%, Unemployment 24%, Inflation is 5%.

Nominal GDP is $20.4 billion. GDP rank is 114th. GDP growth is 2.2%. Nominal per capita GDP is $565. GDP by sector is agriculture 23%, industry 21%, services 56%. Data excludes opium production.

Main industries include textiles, soap, furniture, shoes, fertilizer, apparel, food, beverages, mineral water, cement, carpets, natural gas, coal and copper.  Ease of doing business rand 183rd.

Exports are $784 million of gold, opium, fruit nuts, rugs, wool cotton, hides, gemstones and medical herbs sold to India 46%, Pakistan 41%, Iran 3%, Iraq 2%, Turkey 2%.

Imports are $7.6 billion including machinery, capital goods, food, textiles and petroleum products bought from Iran 22%, Pakistan 17%, China 14%, Kazakhstan 13%, Turkmenistan 7.7%, Malaysia 6.7% and Uzbekistan 3.4%.

Government revenues $2.3 billion, spending $5.3 billion. External debt $3 billion.
