Europe’s attraction to America came from its exports of raw material like agricultural land, gold, wood, firs, tobacco and other goods. The Spanish and Portuguese had been colonizing South America since 1500.  France colonized Canada, Nova Scotia and Newfoundland (15341763). In 1763, the British took over Canada.

In North America, the Dutch and French established trading ports to export goods to Europe. Great Britain established colonies on the Atlantic Coast.

The Original 13 Colonies were founded from1607 to 1732.
1607 Virginia
1620 Plymouth
1626 New York
1630 Massachusetts Bay
1633 Maryland
1636 Rhode Island
1636 Connecticut
1638 New Hampshire
1638 Delaware
1653 North Carolina
1663 South Carolina
1664 New Jersey
1682 Pennsylvania
1732 Georgia

Early colonists became self-sufficient and self-governing land owners quickly. Farms were family-owned and grouped by church affiliation. Some communities grouped by country of origin and language.

Settlers in North America came from England, Ireland, Scotland, Germany, Netherlands, Sweden, Finland, Norway and other countries.

British Acts against the colonies:
1651 Navigation Acts. The Navigation Acts were trade rules that governed commerce between Britain and its colonies. They required shipping by British vessels only.
1733 Molasses Act import tax
1751 Currency Act restricted Bills of Credit
1764 Sugar Act import tax
1765 Stamp Act taxed each sheet of paper used
1765 Quartering Act required colonists to let soldiers in their homes.
1766 Declaratory Act repealed the Stamp Act
1767 Townshend Acts import taxes on wine, tea and other goods.

The British debt was high due to the Seven Years' War (1756-1763) and the French and Indian War (1754–1763). Parliament imposed a series of taxes and other indignities on the North American Colonies.

This prompted the American Revolution in 1775, the Declaration of Independence in 1776, the victory by the Colonists at Yorktown in 1881, the constitutional convention in 1787 and the election of George Washington as President in 1789.
