The majority of household wealth for most families is home equity.  Single family average home price value has appreciated by $432,300 over the past 56 years.

My first house in 1966 was $16000 with a 30 year mortgage and a 4% interest rate.  My monthly payment was $150 or $1800 per year. We sold it for $36000 in 1975 and pocketed $20000. We paid %18000 in 10 years of house payments and got back more than we paid for it. Home ownership is free.
