Niger has a low Per capita GDP at $630.80 and a Trade Deficit at $0.26B. Its major export is gold at $2.35B.

On 26 July 2023, military forces from the Presidential guard overthrew democratically elected President Mohamed Bazoum, who came to power in February 2021, citing poor economic and social governance, along with a deterioration in the security situation.

Niger continues to suffer significant humanitarian needs due to conflicts, displacement, food insecurity, child malnutrition, climatic hazards, and epidemics.

JAS/Boko Haram and ISWAP are both present in Diffa region in southeastern Niger as part of the

transnational Lake Chad Basin conflict involving primarily Nigeria and Cameroon, as well as Chad.Jan 28, 2024

The extreme poverty rate is expected to reach 52.0% in 2023 due to negative per capita growth and rising inflation, which, compared to 2022, will increase the extremely poor population by nearly 1.1 million bringing the total to 14.1 million people in 2023.
