Trump picks former SEC commissioner Paul Atkins to run agency as SEC Chair.
WASHINGTON, Dec 4 Reuters) - U.S. Republican President-elect Donald Trump on Wednesday said he would nominate Paul Atkins to run the Securities and Exchange Commission, putting a prominent and experienced conservative Washington insider atop Wall Street's major regulator.
The appointment of Atkins, a lawyer and former top SEC official who has advocated for de-regulation, spells relief for Wall Street and the crypto industry. Atkins is currently the chief executive at Patomak Global Partners, a Washington-based strategic and risk management advisory business he founded in 2009.
Atkins was born in Lillington, North Carolina. He grew up in Tampa, Florida. He received his A.B. from Wofford College in 1980. He received his J.D. from Vanderbilt University School of Law in 1983.
In the early 1990s, he was a staffer for two former chairmen, Richard Breeden and Arthur Levitt. In 2002, Atkins was picked by President George W. Bush to be one of the agency's five politically-appointed commissioners, a role he held until 2008. At the SEC, Atkins said, opens new tab his "overriding philosophy" was based on the "free market system," and in the role he opposed what he saw as unproductive increases in oversight of hedge funds, opens new tab, internal audit controls, and stock trading rules.
Paul S. Atkins is a lobbyist, businessperson and politician. He is the CEO of Patomak Global Partners LLC. He is co-chair of the Token Alliance, a lobbying group for the crypto business.
Atkins was a commissioner of the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission from 2002 to 2008 during the George W. Bush administration.
On December 4, 2024, President-elect Donald Trump nominated Atkins to serve as Chair of the Securities and Exchange Commission under his second administration.
