Mining in Greenland 1-22-25

There are no active mines in Greenland right now, but there are companies with projects in the works:  

Lumina Sustainable Materials: A company with minority ownership by Hudson Resources that produces anorthosite 

Greenland Ruby: A Norwegian-owned company that produces rubies and pink sapphires 

London Mining: Has an iron ore project in the Nuuk Fiord 

True North Gem: Has a gemstone project at Qeqertarsuatsiat south of Nuuk 

Greenland Minerals: A subsidiary of the Australian mining company Energy Transition Minerals (ETM) that was refused a mining license for its Kvanefjeld project. 

Greenland has been a mining nation since the late 1700s, when coal was excavated in Qaarsut. The Greenland government controls and uses mineral resources in the subsoil, and all industrial prospecting, exploration, and exploitation of mineral resources must be done under license.

The US is defending Greenland from invasion by Russia and China. Pituffik Space Base, formerly known as Thule Air Base, is one of the loneliest U.S. military assignments in the world. Built on Arctic permafrost, the base hosts 200 troops in Greenland's far north. Pituffik SB is locked in by ice nine months out of the year, but the airfield is open and operated year round. Pituffik SB, the DoD's northernmost installation, is operated by the 821st Space Base Group and part of Space Base Delta 1.

The United States military base in Greenland is Pituffik Space Base, formerly known as Thule Air Base. It's located on the northwest coast of Greenland, about 750 miles north of the Arctic Circle. 

Mission: Missile warning, Missile defense, Space surveillance, Satellite command and control, and Scientific research. 

Features: 10,000-foot runway, DoD's northernmost deep-water port, Solid-state phased-array radar, and Pituffik Tracking Station. 

The Monroe Doctrine can still apply to Greenland because it is closely connected to the American Continent. Greenland is a colony of Denmark and is inviting the US to buy leases to mine for minerals needed to supply electronics-related production of batteries.

The population of Denmark is 6 million. Denmark's nominal GDP in 2024 is estimated to be around $410 billion. This is based on data from the IMF and World Economics. 

The population of Greenland is 56,699. Denmark is responsible for defending Greenland. Denmark's military has active-duty personnel in the army, navy, and air force, as well as reserve personnel. In 2024, the Danish Armed Forces had about 21,000 active military personnel and 4,638 civilian personnel. 

The Danish government has announced a huge boost in defense spending for Greenland, hours after US President-elect Donald Trump repeated his desire to purchase the Arctic territory. Danish Defense Minister Troels Lund Poulsen said the package was a "double digit billion amount" in krone, or at least $1.5bn.

Denmark is a NATO member country. Russia and China need to abandon their interest in Greenland. Denmark could ban Russia and China from pursuing mining licenses in Greenland.
