Where Jobs Should Go

The jobs that will be brought back to the US should go wherever these companies want to put these jobs.

In the past, many manufacturing companies located in rural counties because they liked the labor pool, cheaper land and lower tax rates. Manufacturing companies liked the labor pool that grew up on the farm and were familiar with farm equipment. They also liked the self-discipline these farm kids had. They were expected to do farm chores from little on and also get good grades in school.  They were taught to be responsible and productive throughout their childhood.

Manufacturing jobs also need to be encouraged in inner cities to provide a variety of choices of occupations in these cities. Obviously, there are a variety of services and office jobs needed in cities to keep the infrastructure running and these will always be included in cities.

Technology companies who need engineers will look for cities that engineers prefer. Engineers look for “critical mass” of other engineers in their locations. They want to be able to move from company to company if they have to without moving the family out of their neighborhood. Engineers look for jobs that align with their interests and skills.

Everybody likes cities with good weather.  Florida was packed with technology companies during the technology boom of the 1980s.

These companies should also look for affordable cities, suburbs and exurbs. They should consider gridlock when trying to avoid bad decisions and should look at the legislative mentality and the overall cost of doing business in the city and the State.
