Mexican Corn

Mexicans want to grow their own corn. They use corn to make their tortillas and the tortilla is their “national food”. It is tied to their culture and the corn they use and how they make tortillas is important to them. The use stone-ground corn and have customized their corn for tortillas.

The Mexican government isn’t particularly interested in becoming corn-independent. They treat corn as a bargaining chip and will buy it from Brazil and Argentina.  It is more interested in holding on to the manufacturing jobs they got with NAFTA.

US corn growers are already vulnerable to losing its ethanol market as a gasoline additive, because it is stupid, harmful to your lawn mower and unnecessary as a gasoline additive. Now US corn growers are seeing Mexico cutting its US corn imports and are thinking about crop replacement alternatives.

The US imported 1.270,000 metric tons of corn for 2018, so maybe it can stop importing.

The US imported $166.2 billion in agricultural imports in 2017.

The US exported $9.6 billion in corn in 2017. The US trade deficit with Mexico was $71.1 billion in 2017.
