Guatemala Economy


Guatemala has a population of 17.3 million in a land area of 42,042 square miles.  In 2017 GDP was $76 billion with 2018 GDP growth at 3.1% Per-capita GDP was $8,000 per year. GDP by sector was agriculture 13.4%, industry 23.8% and services 62.7%. Labor force was 6.7 million. Unemployment was 2.9%.  Inflation was 4.55%.  Poverty was 59%. Main industries include sugar, textiles, clothing, furniture, chemicals, petroleum, metals, rubber and tourism.

Exports were $10 billion in coffee, sugar, petroleum, apparel, bananas, fruits, vegetables sold to the US 39.2%, El Salvador 11.4%, Honduras 6.8%, Mexico 5.4%, Nicaragua 4%

Imports were $17.5 billion of fuels, machinery, transportation equipment, construction materials, grain, fertilizers, electricity, minerals, chemicals and plastic sold to the US 38.4%, Mexico 11.9%, China 8.3%, El Salvador 5.1%, Colombia 4.2%

Government debt is $24 billion, Revenues $8.3 billion, Spending $9.6 billion. Economic aid $250 million.
