The Popes

We visited the Vatican in Rome on Christmas Day 2001. We toured St. Peter’s Basilica and heard Pope John Paul II repeat his Christmas message in 62 languages. What a sales guy! 

I had studied Church History. I went to the Vatican bookstore and bought a copy of “The Popes”. I was not surprised to see the interference imposed by the State on the Church and the assassinations suffered by the Popes at the hands of the Italian City-States to install their own relatives.  I was not surprised to see the chaos in the middle-ages and the corruption prior to the Reformation.
