Nicaragua Civil War 1960-1990


During the Cold War from 1945 to 1990, Communist Rebels took over dozens of countries. The targets were national governments.

The Sandinista National Liberation Front opposed the Somoza government from 1961 to 1990. Protests began in 1961 and continued to 1977.

By 1978-1979 The Sandinistas had gathered supporters and received arms from the USSR and China. The US backed the Contras who opposed the Sandinistas 30,000 were killed.

The cease fire resulted in a takeover by the Sandinistas in 1979, but was reversed in the election of the National Opposition Union in 1990.


Nicaragua’s Nominal Per Capita GDP in 2019 is $1.983 with a population of 6.3 million and a land area of 50.337 square miles. Nominal GDP is $13 billion. Poverty is 35%.
