Pollutants exist in coal ash ponds. The ponds need to be lined to prevent pollutants from leaching into ground water. These pollutants further need to be chemically treated to remove the poisons and heavy metals. The expense associated with removing this hazard has discouraged power plants from using coal. If cleanup processes are improved, this problem may go away.
