Mining in Greenland


The country has many rich deposits of coal, iron ore, lead, zinc, molybdenum, diamonds, gold, platinum, niobium, tantalite and uranium. The economy of Greenland is partly dependent on the income derived from mineral exploration and extraction. - Jul 25, 2012

The government of Greenland has awarded licenses for exploration and exploitation of natural gas and petroleum in Baffin Bay to the following companies:

A.P. Maersk Oil AP and DON G Energy ASA of Denmark
Nuna Oil A/S of Greenland
Cairn Energy plc. of UK
GDF Suez S.A. of France
Royal Dutch Shell plc of the Netherlands
Statoil ASA of Norway
and ConocoPhillips Corp. of USA


The following export product groups represent the highest dollar value in Greenlandic global shipments during 2018, at the 2-digit Harmonized Tariff System (HTS) code level. Also shown is the percentage share each export category represents in terms of overall exports from Greenland.

Fish: $922.6 million (83.6%)
Meat/seafood preparations: $150.1 million (13.6%)
Miscellaneous animal-origin products: $2.2 million (0.2%)
Gems, precious metals: $1.8 million (0.2%)
Machinery including computers: $1.3 million (0.1%)
Collector items, art, antiques: $1 million (0.1%)
Mineral fuels including oil: $824,000 (0.1%)
Optical, technical, medical apparatus: $798,000 (0.1%)
Iron, steel: $661,000 (0.1%)
Furskins, artificial fur: $290,000 (0.03%)

Greenland’s top 10 exports account for 98% of the overall value of its global shipments.
