Autism

The rapidly increasing prevalence of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) makes finding out what causes ASD even more vital. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), ASD now afflicts 1 in 59 children (and 1 in 37 boys). By contrast, 1 in 150 children were affected in the year 2000.  Other studies suggest that current prevalence may be even higher.
The quick and easy answer to the cause of autism is, “We don’t know.” However, we do have more understanding than this, although the answer is complex. The current understanding of ASD is that there are multiple causes of ASD, not a singular cause of all cases. 
We currently know of many genetic disorders that have ASD associated with them: fragile X syndrome, tuberous sclerosis, Down syndrome, Rett syndrome, and neurofibromatosis.  The knowledge of these genetic disorders and their association with autism has led many scientists to believe that the cause of ASD is primarily genetic.  The heritability of ASD was estimated by scientists to be about 90%.  But, at present, the known genetic disorders that increase the risk of ASD make up at most 25% of cases of ASD. In that investigations into the genetic causes of ASD have been less fruitful than expected, some researchers have turned to studying potential environmental causes.  As such more recent studies have shown the heritability of ASD to be between 37–50%.(1), making the environmental causes of ASD more significant than the genetic ones.  However, it should be noted that any illness is caused by the complex interaction of genes with the environment.  Each person’s cause of ASD may have a different degree to which genetics and the environment play a role.
The environmental causes of ASD have remained somewhat elusive, and proving causality may be impossible.  However, researchers have found some significant correlations of environmental contributants with ASD.  We know that there is an increased risk for ASD in children born to mothers over 35 and to fathers over 40 years of age.  Other risk factors are closer spacing of pregnancies, prematurity, low birth weight, and being a first-born child.  An infection during pregnancy or a prolonged fever also increases the risk for having a child with ASD.  Certain other exposures during pregnancy have been correlated with ASD as well: rubella infection, first-trimester exposure to thalidomide, valproic acid (Depakote for seizures or bipolar disorder), terbutaline use to stop premature labor, and untreated phenylketonuria. There has been growing concern and evidence for an association of ASD with pesticides, phthalates (found in plastics), perfumes, air pollution, other chemicals, and electromagnetic fields.  Further, experts have already known that mercury, lead, arsenic, polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), and toluene are toxic to humans and cause neurodevelopmental disorders. Thus, it would not be surprising if we found that a chemical or combination of chemicals did cause or dramatically increase the risk of ASD. About 85,000 chemicals have been manufactured in the U.S. and of these, 2,800 are used in high volumes with little information about their developmental toxicity.(3)
Several studies have shown that those with ASD have changes in genes that are involved in detoxifying the body from harmful chemicals. This would make those persons more at risk of toxicity and adverse effects from these chemicals. One review of the literature regarding environmental toxicants found 92% of 37 studies showed an association between ASD and environmental exposures such as pesticides, phthalates, PCBs, solvents, toxic waste sites, heavy metals, and air pollutants. The strongest evidence in the studies appeared to be with pesticides and air pollution. Exposure to toxicants in the water supply or mothers’ eating of fish (increasing mercury exposure) was not supported as an increased risk for ASD. It should be noted that these studies show a correlation and do not prove causality.(3)
Pesticides kill “pests” by damaging the pests' nervous system. Thus, it would not be unreasonable if pesticides did have harmful effects on the human nervous system despite not causing death.  Higher levels of organophosphate insecticides have been found in pregnant women whose children later developed ASD.  Also, higher levels of organophosphates in the umbilical cord blood were associated with ASD symptoms in early childhood.  These pesticides have been found to be related to problems in memory, motor coordination, cognitive development, and visuospatial performance.  Since organophosphates were more recently banned for household use, pyrethroids or pyrethrin have been more commonly used as pesticides.  Metabolites of pyrethrins have been found in 70% of adults.  It is clear that these pesticides are pervasive in our environment with little safety data.  But the data that we do have is concerning.  More high-quality studies are needed to evaluate the safety of pesticides used for both agricultural and residential purposes.
Phthalates are chemicals that make plastics flexible and harder to break.  They are used in hundreds of products such as detergents, lubricating oils, vinyl flooring, adhesives, automotive plastics, raincoats, and personal-care products including nail polish, soaps, shampoos, and hairsprays. They are also found in 75% of cosmetics.  Phthalates are found in inflatable toys and some children toys.  One is exposed to phthalates by eating and drinking products that have come into contact with phthalates.  Young children are at greatest risk as they frequently put their hands in their mouths especially after touching plastic toys.(4) According to the CDC, the outcome of exposure to even low levels of phthalates is not known.  I know, this is shocking!
Phthalates have been implicated in behavioral problems, ASD, ADHDobesity, social deficits, thyroid dysfunction, and conduct problems.  In animals, they have been linked to low birth weight, infertility, and abnormalities in male genitalia. One study found a doubling of ASD in children who had polyvinyl chloride (PVC) flooring in the parents' or children’s rooms.  PVC flooring is a significant source of airborne phthalates. (4)
Bisphenol A (BPA) is a type of phthalate that is found in plastic drink bottles, can liners, plastic food wrapping, baby bottles, and more.  It has estrogen properties and disrupts the normal functioning of the endocrine system.  It has also been linked to diabetes and obesity.  BPA was banned in bottles due to health concerns, but there is some evidence that the replacement for BPA, known as BPB, is just as harmful.(4)
To protect you and your children from phthalates, you should reduce the use of products containing phthalates.  When possible, choose products that are phthalate-free.  Limit the number of baby-care products you use. Avoid products with fragrances.  The Campaign for Safe Cosmetics website keeps a list of safe products.  Use glass and stainless steel products when possible instead of plastic when preparing or storing food. If you must use plastic, choose those that state “phthalate-free” or those marked as # 1,2, 4 or 5, which are considered safer. 

Never microwave food in plastic containers or put plastic-ware in the dishwasher.  High temperatures cause leaching of phthalates into food.  Do not use canned formula, but instead use powdered formula or breastfeed. Do not buy PVC products especially if used in teethers.  Avoid inhaling phthalates.  Do not paint unless in well a ventilated room and remove your child from the room until fumes have dissipated.  You can also buy paint without dibutyl phthalate. Choose non-vinyl shower curtains and raincoats. Clean frequently as phthalates end up in the dust in your home. Do not use air fresheners as all have phthalates in them. If you use perfume, spray it on your clothes and not on your skin. (4)

Lastly, vaccines have been implicated in causing ASD. This history is long and involved, but suffice it to say that many very high quality studies have disproven any link between vaccines and ASD.  In response to parental concerns, a 2013 study was done, showing no link between the number of vaccines given to a child and ASD. A 2015 study found that the MMR vaccine was not associated with ASD even in those at greater risk of ASD, including siblings of those with ASD.(5)


Comments

Moms do have their children vaccinated, but they limit the number of vaccines administered at the same time. Kids are like a box of chocolates, you never know what you’re gonna get.

We are in the “search for the correlations” phase of our understanding of autism. It can be expensive, unproductive, irrelevant and dangerous. We are the lab rats in this quest.

Regulations are based on correlation and wrong conclusions have consequences. We invited a recurrence of malaria when we banned DDT. Lead paint is only dangerous when you eat it. Class action suits invite fraud and TV advertising expense. The vast majority of cancer deaths in my subdivision were non-smokers.

Alarmists will demand the end of most commercial products, Lawyers will remain fully employed and expensive. We are functioning in a sabotage-rich political environment. New laws are passed daily to limit our use of new products.

We don’t follow the precautions suggested in this article. We continue to put our Tupperware in the microwave and the dishwasher. We haven’t replaced our vinyl shower curtains. We continue to use soap, air fresheners, perfume and hairspray.

Mercury in Vaccines


FAQ's About Mercury (Thimerosal) in Vaccines

Q: Is it true that all the mercury has been removed from vaccines? How much mercury is in the flu shot and other recommended vaccines? Should I go out of my way to find a thimerosal-free flu shot and where can I find one?

A: Even though most of the vaccines routinely administered to infants in the United States no longer contain more than trace amounts of ethyl mercury in the form of Thimerosal, the entire vaccine supply is not Thimerosal-free. The most notable exception to this is the seasonal influenza (flu) vaccine. Most, but not all, influenza vaccine still contains Thimerosal. Notably, many vaccines used in third world countries are mercury containing and exceed safety guidelines established in the United States.

Information on vaccines that contain significant amounts of Thimerosal can also be found on the Food and Drug Administration's website and Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health's Institute for Vaccine Safety website.

Manufacturers began voluntarily removing Thimerosal from pediatric vaccines around 2000. It is assumed that most pediatric vaccines containing Thimerosal were “off the shelves” by 2003. (No vaccines were recalled.) Even so, most infants are still routinely given Thimerosal-containing influenza vaccine even though there are Thimerosal-free and vaccines with trace amounts of Thimerosal. Infants receiving a Thimerosal-containing influenza vaccine are dosed at 6 months with 12.5 mcg of ethyl mercury and at 7 months with an additional 12.5 mcg. Adult Thimerosal-containing vaccines contain roughly 25mcg. These Thimerosal-containing version exceed federal safety guidelines mentioned earlier. Depending on the vaccines administered, at six months of age, infants today born to mothers who received flu vaccine during pregnancy could receive up to 71 mcg of ethyl mercury compared to 187.5 mcg prior to efforts to decrease the amount of thimerosal in infant vaccines. 
Additionally, the CDC guidelines recommend that all children receive an annual influenza vaccine beginning at 6 months of age. As a result, the total amount of thimerosal given to children under 5 years of age is almost what it was prior to 2000.

There are other sources of mercury exposure in infants. Specifically, it should be recognized that influenza vaccine recommended for pregnant women and some rhogam preparations contain ethyl mercury in the form of thimerosal. Total mercury burden include other sources including dental amalgams (silver fillings), food especially some types of fish, and air pollution from coal-fired power plants and wildfires.

Concerns regarding mercury in vaccines were addressed in a letter published by the Journal Pediatrics on March 13, 2008 (update 3/17/2016: letter is no longer available online). As noted in the letter, parents and pregnant women may want to consider the following data and make an informed decision.
·       0.5 parts per billion (ppb) mercury = Kills human neuroblastoma cells (Parran et al., Toxicol Sci 2005; 86: 132-140).
·       2 ppb mercury = U.S. EPA limit for drinking water.
·       20 ppb mercury = Neurite membrane structure destroyed (Leong et al., Neuroreport 2001; 12: 733-37).
·       200 ppb mercury = level in liquid the EPA classifies as hazardous waste.
·       25,000 ppb mercury = Concentration of mercury in the Hepatitis B vaccine, administered at birth in the U.S., from 1990-2001.
·       50,000 ppb Mercury = Concentration of mercury in multi-dose DTaP and Haemophilus B vaccine vials, administered 4 times each in the 1990's to children at 2, 4, 6, 12 and 18 months of age.
·       50,000 ppb Mercury = Current "preservative" level mercury in multi-dose flu (94% of supply), meningococcal and tetanus (7 and older) vaccines. This can be confirmed by simply analyzing the multi- dose vials.

Snowflakes Graduating


With Free Speech Zones and Safe Spaces for All…By Lathan Watts, 5/31/19, American Thinker.

Each year during graduation season we are treated to what amounts to the closing ceremony of the Olympics of virtue signaling on college campuses across the nation. The competitors, students who have spent four years in training. huddeling in safe spaces to avoid speakers with whom they disagree, using the free speech zone to learn what they’re supposed to be offended by, and demanding ridiculous measures be adopted by university administrators to remedy every perceived ill in human history. The gold medalists in this farce are the “walk-outs”, the students who draw as much attention to themselves as possible by walking out of the commencement ceremony in protest of the commencement speaker. This year is no different; ask Vice President Mike Pence.

Beyond the risk of causing most Americans to suffer repetitive stress injury from excessive eye rolling, this trend presents a real threat that must not be taken lightly. These students are being taught a perverse version of freedom. Namely that freedom is the right to never be made uncomfortable. Once these putative tyrants of “tolerance” graduate, they will inevitably be confronted with people and ideas very different from their own and they will react in the manner for which they were applauded in college, they will seek to silence opposition. My firm, First Liberty Institute, deals with the repercussions on a daily basis.

Consider Ken Hauge, a retired minister, who was threatened with eviction from his senior living complex in Fredericksburg, Virginia for leading a Bible study in a private apartment. His home is no longer a safe space for the free exercise of religion. Rabbi David Ribiat, one of our orthodox Jewish clients in the Village of Airmont, New York, has spent years and over $40,000.00 trying (unsuccessfully) to obtain a permit from the local government to simply host fellow Jews in his home to worship.

Surely there could be no safer space in America than a military base? Not so for Oscar Rodriguez, a decorated Air Force retiree who was physically assaulted by uniformed airmen and removed from a retirement ceremony for attempting to give a patriotic flag folding speech that included the word “God.” Adding insult to injury, the Air Force has refused to even apologize for the incident and the officer responsible was promoted.

There was no free speech zone for Aaron and Melissa Klein, whose family business Sweetcakes by Melissa was penalized $135,000.00 for not speaking the state approved message on marriage. The Oregon Bureau of Labor and Industry essentially bankrupted a private business because they didn’t like the religious beliefs of the owners.

Thankfully, our Founding Fathers instilled in the Constitution the only free speech zone or safe space anyone ever needed: the United States of America. My trust in the principles of the Constitution is my confidence in our ultimate victory for these clients.

President Reagan famously noted, “Freedom is never more than one generation away from extinction. We didn't pass it to our children in the bloodstream. It must be fought for, protected, and handed on for them to do the same.”

While we fight and win these court battles today, it’s frightening to think these students walking out of or protesting at commencement ceremonies are the decision makers of tomorrow. When we hand on to them the freedom we fought for will they even want it? Or have they been so conditioned to an Orwellian notion of freedom that continually restricts acceptable viewpoints, speech, and religious beliefs to the whims of cultural orthodoxy that they never consider the possibility that one day their own ideas may fall out of fashion and find themselves in a prison of their own making. The Humanesque irony notwithstanding, we will all suffer for their constitutional shortsightedness.

So, when we see the news reports of the next episode of outrage theater, let us each resolve to do more than our usual sigh of lament for “these kids today.” Let us graciously teach by our example the true meaning of freedom handed on to us by our forefathers – none of us are free unless all of us are free. It is a lesson that must be continually learned in a civic classroom from which we never graduate.

US College Grad Underemployed 2019


When elementary and high schools lowered their standards in reading, writing and arithmetic, it produced students with low proficiency in reading, writing and math. In the 1960s, poor students didn’t pass the entrance exams and went to work for lower paying jobs. There were plenty of jobs and these high school grads managed to become self-supporting and some did well. In 1965, 12% of men and 7% of women in the US citizens had a Bachelors’ Degree.

In the 1980s, high schools replaced basics with propaganda and colleges lowered their standards. It fell to Junior Colleges to offer remedial courses to bring low skill high school grads up to speed. When these remedial students applied for college, they got in, but colleges also began to offer courses that were not occupational and students to earn useless majors. In 1985, 23% of men and 16% of women in the US had Bachelors’ Degree.

After the 1980s, colleges spent $billions on buildings to create an attractive campus and colleges became more of a “life experience” than a useful training center.

In 2019, 34.6% of men and 35.3% of women in the US have a Bachelors’ Degree.


The Great Underemployed

Classical Education in Liberal Arts including English, History, Geography, Philosophy, Psychology, Sociology and Theology had been taught along with Mathematics, General Science, Chemistry, Physics and Biology in high school and colleges still offered degrees in these, but sometimes in preparation for graduate studies. Teachers of these Arts & Sciences should hold degrees in these disciplines. These are fields of study need to be taken together in context. History and Economics should be integrated to understand motives and outcomes to assess current events.

Government jobs were the only jobs available from 2008 and 2016 and colleges had millions of students taking Criminal Justice, Public Policy and Law, Family & Consumer Services, Misc. Technologies, Animal and Plant Sciences, Environmental Studies, Political Science, General Social Science, International Affairs, Misc. Biological Science, Earth Science, Early Childhood Education, Misc. Education, Secondary Education, General Education, Special Education and Elementary Education. In 2017, the music stopped and there were fewer chairs to land on.

Healthcare jobs have been building since the 1980s and colleges had millions of students taking Medical Technology, Nutrition Science, Misc. Biological Science, Health Services, Biology, Biochemistry, Pharmacy and Nursing.

Engineering jobs were off-shored with manufacturing jobs after 1993. There were fewer jobs for Engineers, but colleges continued to offer Industrial Engineering, Civil Engineering, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, General Engineering, Architecture, Aerospace Engineering, Physics, Mathematics, Chemistry, Physical Sciences, Computer Science, Information System Management, Construction Services and Engineering Technology,

Business jobs were available and colleges continued to offer degrees in Business Management, General Business, Communications, Marketing, Economics, Business Analytics, Accounting,  Information Systems Management.

Non-Profits arose after the 1990s in response to the Social Engineering fad and colleges offered courses in Ethnic Studies and Environmental Studies.

Artist jobs were always around, but became hobbies rather than self-supporting occupations for most students. But colleges continued to offer degrees in Performing Arts, Fine Arts, Art History, Commercial Art & Graphics Design,

Media jobs were around, but print media declined after the internet became available in 1995. Colleges continued to offer degrees in Journalism, Mass Media, Advertising & Public Relations, Communications,

Resort, Hotel and Restaurant jobs became popular in the 1980s and colleges offered courses in Leisure & Hospitality, but students already worked in these industries as waiters, cooks and other staff jobs.

Agricultural jobs had declined, but colleges still offered courses in Agriculture, Animal & Plant Sciences.

Many of the Underemployed college grads with Engineering Degrees lack the basic skills required to function in their professions.  Many other college grads received degrees in fields that are not in demand. Many underemployed graduates are no longer interested in working in their professions. Many underemployed graduates are sub-par.

US College Grads in High Cost States


It costs more to live in New York, New Jersey, California, Massachusetts and Maryland. Salaries reported in this article are not representative of salaries paid to all college grads.

Going to a top college can really pay off. On average, graduates from the best schools in the country earn well over six-figures mid-way through their careers. But as the cost of college rises and wage growth remains stubbornly low, carefully deciding where to spend your college years has become more important than ever before.

Salary comparison site PayScale recently analyzed 2,646 associate and bachelor’s degree-granting institutions throughout the U.S. in order to determine which students earned the most after graduation. When they looked at the median salaries of graduates who only had a bachelor’s degree, they found that 10 colleges produced students with sky-high salaries five and 10 years into their careers.

Surprisingly, only two Ivy League schools made the list. In fact, the number one school for salary potential is a small liberal arts college with a total undergraduate enrollment of just 844.

US MBA Application Decline


Colleges offering MBA degrees report 70% of schools in the US say applications are down, by Abigail Hess, 10/3/18.

U.S. business schools are seeing a major drop in applications. According to a survey of 1,087 graduate business programs at 363 business schools by the Graduate Management Admission Council, 70 percent of two-year full-time MBA programs in the United States saw a decline in application volume this year.

Even the most prestigious institutions were not immune. According to The Wall Street Journal, Harvard Business School saw a 4.5 percent decline in applications, Stanford's Graduate School of Business saw a 4.6 percent decline, and Wharton saw a 6.7 percent decline.

At the same time, the number of applications to international business schools remained stable or increased. The GMAC survey finds that applications for business school programs are up 8.8 percent in Asia, 7.7 percent in Canada and 3.2 percent in Europe. The U.S., however, saw an overall 6.6 percent decline.

Some say that anti-immigrant policies — such as threats to reduce the number of international student visas distributed are to blame for the apparent decline in interest in United States-based business schools. Across programs in the U.S., international applications fell by 10.5 percent, while domestic applications fell by just 1.8 percent.

"There's no doubt that immigration policy is having a negative impact on U.S. business schools," William Boulding, dean of Duke University's Fuqua School of Business, tells Poets&Quants. "You've seen growth in business schools outside the U.S., but the U.S. is losing the pipeline of talent. If we are going to maintain our reputation for having the best business schools in the world, we have to be able to attract the best and brightest in the world."
Applications at Fuqua fell by 6.2 percent this year.

Others credit the dip in applications to a potential decline in the value-added ratio, the bump in salary associated with earning a degree compared with the cost of tuition of an MBA. Even though alumni from the top business schools lead some of the biggest companies in the world and earn well over six figures on average, rising tuition costs and a strong labor market may make going to business school a less-rewarding investment today than in years prior.

The idea that business school is no longer worth the cost is an opinion that business figures such as Mark Cuban and Silicon Valley angel investor Jason Calacanis have both championed.

"I am not a fan of getting MBAs at all. I am a fan of going to college, but not a fan of getting an MBA," says Cuban.
"I don't have an MBA, but I hire a lot of them and I invest in them," Calacanis tells CNBC Make It. "I do think that education has the worst value ratio." Calacanis suggests that students invest their money in starting a business instead of going back to school.

But while the cost of earning an MBA may be rising, a business degree is still linked to positive outcomes. According to The Financial Times, almost two-thirds of recent business-school graduates more than doubled their salaries in 2018 and the average salary for a recent business-school graduate is roughly $150,000.

EU Globalist Decline


Hillsdale College audio 5/24/19 covers a discussion of the implications of demise of the UN globalist oriented politicians in the UK, Australia, France, Italy and Germany.

The Brexit vote in the UK and the election of Trump in the US in 2016 started the Anti-EU movement. Poland refused to take refugees then Hungary and Italy refused to take refugees. All other EU member countries are attempting to send their refugees back to their home countries.

In France, Pro-EU President Macron has been rejected for attempting to increase the gasoline tax to pay for the Climate Change hoax.

In the UK, Prime Minister Theresa May has resigned over her failure to manage the Brexit exit. The UK voters want to leave the EU, but the Parliament fails to approve a “hard exit”.

In Germany, Chancellor Angela Merkel’s Pro-EU Party has lost votes since 2016.

In Israel, Benjamin Netanyahu has been re-elected.

A large number of Anti-EU politicians have just been elected to the EU Parliament.  

The world’s voters are tired of being ignored and abused by their governments. They are beginning to elect politicians who will restore the “consent of the governed” and national sovereignty.
