Fads 12-26-24

Fashon Fads began in earnest in the 1890s and continued to include every imaginable hat, scarf, dress, suit and tie. Ties sizes went from thin to wide to average. “Leisure Suits came and went. Scarfs surged in the 1960s and disappeared. Hats changed to baseball caps. Clothing went from “clean to grunge in the 1960s. Haircuts went from short to long and back to short. In the 1990s, ‘business casual” replaced suits and ties. The Fads were created by clothing manufacturers who wanted continuous change.

This led to Color Fads for homes from the 1960s to present and included a change in home appliance kitchen color schemes from white to dark to green to yellow to stainless steel. Countertops changed from vinal to wood to granite. Oven units added Microwaves. Coffee Makers went from percolators to coffee-mates. Kitchen floors changed from Vinal to Tile to Wood. Walls went from plaster to paneling to drywall. Woodwork went from blond to dark to light oak and is now returning back to dark.  The Fads were created by appliance manufacturers who wanted to achieve continuous remodeling.

Automobiles went from medium-size to long and wide in the 1970s and went back to medium-size in the 1980s. Toyota and Honda began to grow US market share with better quality, better fuel efficiency and longer life from 100,000 miles to 300,000 miles.

The Toyota Prius Hybrid tripled fuel efficiency in 2005 to 60mpg. Other heavier Hybrids did not reduce their weight and suffered. SUVs and Trucks continue to sell. The Biden EV mandate failed in 2024. The US needs a “cost-reduced” gas powered hybrid car.
