Republican
presidential candidate Donald Trump received a presidential welcome when he
traveled to Miami’s Little Havana Tuesday.
Addressed
by Cuban-Americans who called him “Mr.
Soon-to-be-President”
and even “Mr. President,” Trump noted the contrast between the warm welcome he
was given and the negative status among Hispanic voters according to the media.
“You
know, when I started off with the Hispanic community, I knew that I had great relationships but it wasn’t reading
that way in the newspapers,” he told a crowd.
“We’re
leading Florida right now,” he said. “And we’re doing that because of the
Hispanic community to a large extent.” Participants
at a town hall-style event told Trump how strongly they support his candidacy.
“I will
support and did support everything that you are doing because I believed in you
as a businessman and a leader,” said one woman who spoke to Trump in Spanish. “I
believe as a citizen of the United States we need a leader such as yourself,”
she said.
Some
praised Trump for already making a difference just by running for the
presidency. “I don’t
know how to thank you for just jumping into this cesspool. Simply because you
don’t want this country to turn out to be another Cuba, another Venezuela,”
said businessman Max Alvarez.
“I have so many friends from Cuba, and they
are unhappy — not about a deal being made, but about the right deal being
made,” said Trump, who has attacked the Obama administration for embracing
Cuba’s current leadership.
“What
Trump has said about the Chinese and the Arabs and the Muslims — like he said,
all these people are the ones who want to destroy this country, starting with
this president,” Roteta added.
For an
emigre who languished in a Cuban jail to meet a presidential candidate he
supports was overwhelming to Roteta. “I’m like a little kid,” Roteta said. “I’m
so happy.”
