In the 1600s, the US was populated by persecuted refugees from Britton, seeking religious freedom. Briton was out of lumber and needed it to build ships. The colonists came from Britian where Royals owned the land and rented it to farm families. In the colonies, families could use the land to grow their own food and practice their religions. They built homes and formed communities. Families learned to read the Bible. Children were home-schooled. Colonists felt free. Skilled trades were needed and gave colonists a path to success. Manufacturing was home-based. Colleges were formed.
By the 1750s Irish, Scottish, Welsh, Dutch and German colonists had joined the colonies,
By the 1800s French and Spanish families became US citizens. Native Americans were invited to assimilate or move to reservations in the West. In the 1850s Spanish families became US citizens. These were followed by Italians, Jews and Asians.Families from all other European countries landed here. Former Black Slaves became citizens after 1865.
