The interest rates for federal student loans for the 2024–2025 academic year are: Undergraduate loans: 6.53%. Graduate loans: 8.08%

A Student Loan of 12,308 will cost an additional $8037 in interest costs and result in a loan balance of $20,345.

As of 2024, the average student loan balance in the United States is around $29,300 per borrower. It’s easy to see that 4 years of tuition loans could result in a $120,000 loan balance. Interest cost on $120,000 for Undergraduate loans is $7836 per year You can pay off 12,000 per year for 10 years if you continue to live with your parents, but you will also need to pay $78,360 in interest.

The $12,308 cost does not cover room and board or rental and food costs. It is the cost of In-state tuition in 2025. 

Before you “invest” in college, it is wise to remember the Statistician who drowned in a lake with a mean depth of 3 feet.

If you really need to go to college, it’s best to work your way through one course at a time at a local State College and refuse to take out any student loans.
