US Popular Cars 1-23-25

Trump has proposed lowering the corporate tax from 21% to 15% and he would allow the same 15% rate to foreign manufacturers. He knows that Japanese and South Korean cars are popular with US buyers. May the best cars win.

Which auto companies are not union? We understand that UAW has begun organizing efforts at 13 non-unionized automakers: Tesla, Rivian, Lucid, BMW, Honda, Hyundai, Mazda, Mercedes, Nissan, Subaru, Toyota, Volkswagen, and Volvo Cars.

The United Automobile, Aerospace and Manufacturing Workers (UAW) represents unionized auto workers in the United States. Some of the auto manufacturers that are unionized include:

Chevrolet: Makes the Bolt, Camaro, Corvette, Express, Silverado, and Tahoe

Ford: Makes the Mustang, F-150, F-650/750, Ranger, and Super Duty

GMC: Makes the Canyon, Sierra, and Hummer EV

Cadillac: Makes the CT4, CT5, Escalade, Lyriq, XT4, XT5, and XT6

Buick: Makes the Enclave

Dodge: Makes the Challenger and Charger

Jeep: Makes the Gladiator, Cherokee, Grand Cherokee, Wagoneer, and Wrangler

Lincoln: Makes the Aviator, Corsair, and Navigator

There are also German brands like Mercedes and VW that are popular in the US.

Major auto manufacturers in Canada include Ford, General Motors, Honda, Stellantis, and Toyota. These auto manufacturers have plants in Ontario and Windsor, Canada.

Canada plans to phase out internal combustion engine vehicle (ICEV) sales in favour of electric vehicles (EVs) by 2035 as part of its climate policy. It is likely that Canada will end their EV mandate.

Comments

Trump’s ending the US EV mandate will affect Canada. Trump’s Corporate Tax reduction from 21% to 15% matches Canada’s 15% Corporate Tax.

The US needs Auto Manufacturers to develop reliable, fuel-efficient new cars for $20,000, so that drivers with lower household income can afford cars they need.  These cars should be hybrids with fewer expensive electronic gadgets. The average price of a new car is $44,000. About 34% of US households earn more than $100,000 per year. The number of US car buyers for $44,000 cars is limited.

In 1974 I bought a Triumph Spitfire to commute to work. It was the “Model T” of its day. It was a 2-seat convertible. It had a heater but no air conditioning and no electric seats or windows. I paid $2000 and drove it for 5 years. It got 30mpg, when other cars got 10mpg. I sold it for $2000 when I had to replace it with a station wagon, because we had 6 kids. I did all the oil changes and maintenance myself. In 1979, I bought a Honda 150 motorcycle to commute to work. We lived in Salina Kansas from 1975 to 1983. When we moved to the Atlanta Metro in1983, we bought 2-year old cars to get 20mpg. When gasoline prices hit $3/gal. we bought Toyota Prius Hybrids to get 60mpg.
