Bernie Sanders
often refers to Denmark when he argues that America needs to make the switch to
Socialism. Danish Prime Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen shocked the socialist
candidate when he stated earlier this week: “We are not the socialist utopia
Bernie Sanders thinks we are.”
Sanders isn’t
the only candidate to speak fondly of Denmark. During the first Democratic
primary debate, Hillary Clinton also expressed a fondness for the socialist
country.
“For the last
30 years I’ve been standing up for the working families of this country and I
think I’m the only candidate who is prepared to take on the billionaire class
which now controls our economy and increasingly controls the political life of
this country,” said Sanders on ABC News after being asked why he would be the
best choice for president. “We need a political revolution in this country
involving millions of people who are prepared to stand up and say ‘enough is
enough’ and I want to help lead that effort.”
Sanders noted
that he likes and respects Hillary Clinton, but that this country needs “real
political shakeup” and that we must move “beyond establishment politics.”
Sanders, by the
way, classifies himself as a Democratic Socialist. “I think we
should look to countries like Denmark, like Sweden and Norway, and learn from
what they have accomplished for their working people,” said Sanders.
Turns out
Sanders is wrong about more than a few things.
Prime Minister
Rasmussen spoke at Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government earlier this week,
saying, “I know that some people in the US associate the Nordic model with some
sort of socialism,” said Rasmussen. “Therefore I would like to make one thing
clear: Denmark is far from a socialist planned economy. Denmark is a market
economy.” Looks like Bernie hasn’t done his homework.
