US Job Openings 12-7-25

As of August 2025, there were 7.2 million job openings in the US, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). This number is down slightly from the previous year but remains a key indicator of employer demand, showing that jobs were available and employers were actively recruiting for positions that could start within 30 days.

What counts as an opening: A job is considered open if there is work available, the job could start within 30 days, and the employer is actively recruiting. 

As of August 2025, the latest period for which data is available, there were approximately 7.2 million job openings in the United States. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reports this number monthly as part of its Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey (JOLTS). 

The number of job openings for August 2025 was largely unchanged from the previous month and down from August 2024, when there were 7.6 million job openings. 

Key Details from the August 2025 Report

Total Job Openings: 7,227,000 (seasonally adjusted).

Job Openings Rate: The rate was steady at 4.3%.

Hires and Separations: Both hires and total separations remained relatively unchanged for the month, each at around 5.1 million.

Industry Snapshot: Job openings increased in health care and social assistance, leisure and hospitality, and retail trade, but decreased in construction and the federal government. 

Upcoming Data Release

The Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey (JOLTS) data for September 2025 was scheduled to be released on Tuesday, November 4, 2025. The data for later months in 2025 is not yet publicly available as of today, December 4, 2025, due to the BLS data reporting schedule. The BLS typically releases data with a one-to-two-month lag.
