Most soybeans are processed for their oil and protein for the animal feed
industry. A smaller percentage is processed for human consumption and made into
products including soy milk,
soy flour, soy protein, tofu and many retail food
products. Soybeans are also used in many non-food (industrial) products.
Industrial products include Astro Turf,
paintballs, candles, wood stains, crayons, hydraulic fluid, ink, chewing gum,
spray foam insulation and fire logs.
Around 70 percent of the world's soy is fed directly to livestock
and only six percent of soy
is turned into human food, which is mostly consumed in Asia. The rest of soy is
turned into soybean oil.
Soy is used to feed cattle, pigs, fish,
chickens, sheep and other animals.
