Modern Transport

The invention of the printing press in 1439 contributed to the development of all modern inventions.

The steam engine invented in 1698 and the internal combustion engine invented in 1859 led to modern transport.

The use of fire to heat water to produce steam was discovered in 1 AD by Hero of Alexandria. The first pipe organ using heated water was invented in 1125 AD.

The use of animals, pulling heavy loads on rails is recorded in 1720 building a French fort in Nova Scotia. In 1795, the first rails were built to pull heavy loads of dirt near Boston. Rails were used to move heavy loads from 1720 to 1830. These railroads were built from the extraction site to the delivery site, often 5 to 10 miles.

The first US railroad was the Baltimore Ohio Railroad opened in 1827 and was 26 miles long. In the 1830s, multiple railroads were being built in multiple states to move cargo and passengers. By the 1850s, these railroads had grown and connected.

The invention of the steam engine in 1698 led to the use of the steam engine in automobiles in 1769 and locomotives in 1804.  The internal combustion engine was invented in 1859.

The introduction of steam engines for powering blast air to blast furnaces led to a large increase in British iron production after the mid 1750s.
Automobiles were steam powered from 1672 to 1900, but the invention of the internal combustion engine in 1859 accelerated the development of automobiles.

The first steam-powered vehicle was supposedly built in 1672 by Ferdinand Verbiest, a Flemish Jesuit in China. The vehicle was a toy for the Chinese Emperor.

French inventor, Nicolas Cugnot produced the first steam engine automobile in 1769 and allowed manufacturers to develop these first horseless carriages.

From 1769 to 1889, many individuals in many countries designed and built their own steam driven automobiles. By 1890, steam-powered automobiles were being sold to wealthy consumers. In the US in 1902, 485 of 909 automobiles were steam powered.

The internal combustion engine was invented in 1859 and was improved in 1876.

Ford Motor Company was established in 1903.  General Motors was established in 1908. Chrysler was established in 1925.
