Yemen borders Saudi
Arabia. The current civil war in Yemen started in 2015 between the government
and Al Qaeda/ISIS headquartered in Yemen. Saudi Arabia and UAE have entered on
the side of the government. To date 8,670–13,600 people have been killed in Yemen,
including more than 5,200 civilians.
Yemen has been an East-West trading post since
5000BC. It is Muslim, tribal and divided between North and South that
reluctantly merged after 1918. Al
Qaeda/ISIS is the current problem.
Yemen has a Population
of 29 million. Land area is 203,850
square miles. Labor force 7.2 million (2012). Unemployment 37% (2014). Poverty
54% (2014), Inflation 20% (2017),
(GDP $69 billion in
2017. Per capita GDP $3800 (2014). GDP by sector services 61.6%, agriculture
24.1%, industry 14.3%. Labor force by
sector includes agriculture, herding and construction.
Main industries
include crude oil production, petroleum refining, cotton, food, cement, ship
repair.
Exports were $8.3
billion in 2014 including crude oil, coffee, fish and liquid natural gas sold
to China 28.3%, South Korea 23%, Thailand 11.2%, India 8.8%, Japan 8.1% UAE

Imports were $10.2
billion in 2014 in food, live animals, machinery, equipment and chemicals from
China 15.9% UAE 14%, India 9.6%, Saudi Arabia 6.6%, Kuwait 5%, Turkey 4.6%

Government debt was
6.5 billion in 2008 and 42.5% of GDP in 2012. Government Revenues were $7.83
billion in 2012 Expenses were $10.55 billion in 2008. Economic aid was $2.3
billion (2003-07).
