Syria Economy 5-9-24

Syria is a terrorist infested failed State. It houses 10,000 ISIS prisoners and must control its oil drilling capabilities. Syrian Kurds associated with the People's Protection Units (YPG) and its political wing, the Democratic Union Party (PYD) have controlled parts of northeastern Syria since 2014 during the height of the Syrian civil war as they sought autonomy within the Syrian state.

Nominal GDP $ 9B per capita GDP $13.920, Population 23,022,427, Debt to GDP 101.8%,

Inflation 20.4%, Unemployment 13.5%, Labor force 38.7%, Land Area 71,198 sq miles, Arable Land 32.8%, Imports $435.6M, Exports $1.2B, Trade Surplus $1.4B.

US aid $1.1B, UN aid $4.07B. 16.7 million or 73% of the population requires aid.

Exports include crude oil, pure olive oil ($140M), nuts ($43.8M), calcium phosphates ($43.2M), raw cotton ($34.2M), and spice seeds ($29.1M), clothing, fruits and cereal grains.

Imports include raw materials essential for industry, agriculture, equipment, and machinery.

Twelve years into Syria's devastating civil war, the conflict appears to have settled into a frozen state. Although roughly 30% of the country is controlled by opposition forces, heavy fighting has largely ceased and there is a growing regional trend toward normalizing relations with the regime of Bashar al-Assad.

Turkish forces currently occupy parts of northern Syria and, since 2016, have fought the SDF, IS and the Assad government while actively supporting the Syrian National Army (SNA).

Syria is 74% Sunni and 26% Shia, Alawite and other. The Alawite run the government.

The Alawite sect has become politically dominant in Syria, particularly since 1971, when Ḥafiz al-Assad, an Alawite, was elected president of the country.

Islamic terrorist groups active in Syria include Iran funded groups.
