Conservation Easements

One Woman’s Courageous Fight Against Sustainable Tyranny

Martha Bonata bought 64 acres of beautiful farm land in Fauquier County seven years ago. The barn was in disrepair and the land hadn’t been well taken care of. She set out to change that, spending thousands to turn the barn into a quaint little store. She brought in over 150 rescued animals, including goats, ducks, turkeys, even an emus.

She used the store to sell items grown on the property, including tomatoes and eggs. In addition, Martha is incredibly talented in crafting decorative and useful items from her farm sources. For example, her emus’ feathers, which it drops on the ground, are turned into jewelry. She created a wooden item that contains small slits on each of its four sides. In the slits she stuffs bits of wool discarded by her sheep. The item’s purpose was to hang in the yard so birds can use the bits of wool to make their nests. Above all, Martha turned the farm into a classic organic farm of naturally grown produce.

Everything was looking great for a lady anxious to get her hands in the dirt. Oh yes, there was just one small detail brought up during the negotiation for the purchase of the property. The Piedmont Environmental Council slipped in a conservation easement on the property.  This specific easement did not pay any cash to Martha nor did it provide any tax credits. All the benefits went to PEC. Martha signed the document because she had been told conservation easements were a way to protect the farm from being developed. She was for that.

But there is one major aspect of Martha’s value system that doesn’t fit the PEC profile for the perfect small farmer. She believes in private property rights. And that’s when the trouble started.  Space does not allow a full description of the battles Martha has faced over her attempts to farm her land. Here is the “Cliff notes” version:

Martha does not live on the farm, she owns a home in another location. The conservation easement she signed said she could have a small 1600 square foot residence on the property. She never used the facility as a residence.

The Fauquier County planning board suddenly issued notice that Martha would be fined for selling items that were not produced on her farm, something she never actually did. And they warned that she needed another permit in order to use the facility for events.

She was immediately threatened with fines of $5000 a day for each violation brought by the County. The evidence used against her by the county was a photo of a children’s birthday party that Martha had posted on her face book page, allegedly proving that she had rented out the barn for a party. in fact, it was a private party for personal friends. No money exchanged hands for the facility. But the battle was on.

Martha began to learn what a powerful weapon conservation easements can be in the hands of those who wanted to control her actions. The easement gave the PEC the right to occasionally inspect the property for “violations’ of the easement. Suddenly Martha was informed that PEC inspectors would visit the farm to investigate the “living quarters.” Rather than a random, occasional, or annual visit, PEC came back again and again; demanding to look into her private closets; even banning her right to video tape the inspections on her own property.

The PEC found fault with a simple water nozzle Martha had purchased to use in washing her animals. Somehow that was a violation. There is an old cemetery on the property dating back to 1832. In it are buried the families of former residents of the area and black slaves. To keep the farm animals from walking though the cemetery, Martha installed a simple fence. “Violation,” said PEC, “It damages the view shed.” On and on went the harassment over such idiotic claims. Along with it came thousands of dollars of legal expenses as Martha fought to defend herself.

Eventually, as a result of non-stop pressure and the threat of fines from the County, plus the pressure from PEC, not to mention a “coincidental” IRS audit, Martha was forced to close her little store, seriously damaging a major part of her ability to earn income from the farm.

Worse, county officials have made outrageous claims in attempts to justify their actions. They claim that Martha’s small store, and others like it on local farms, will lead to the establishment of Walmarts in rural areas. And most recently one official has made the claim on local television that her store is the pathway to junk yards and car lots.

What was her real crime? She had challenged county planning restrictions. And in doing so, she had become a threat to their authority and that of the PEC, which is the driving force behind county controls over private property.

Reliance on Media is Limited

If you need facts, you will find yourself on the internet, looking up information.

Local Newspapers are full of “light reading” with articles on places to go, things to do, human interest stories and information on hobbies, cooking and gardening.  There are equal amounts of information on sports, community activities and entertainment.  Some readers only read “light”.  Ads may be part of “light reading” unless the reader actually needs to buy something.
Hard news includes national news, international news, business news, hurricanes, tornados, tsunamis, floods, volcano eruptions, earth quakes, fires, local crime, court cases, accidents and local government issues.

TV News is similar and covers the same material.
Media will report what it is given, so beware, Propaganda, Disinformation, False Flags and Cover Stories do exist, especially with political issues.  Political ideology and special interest spin colors what is reported by the time it reaches you.

Analysis of known facts rarely accompanies news articles.  Articles citing increases in jobs, neglects to compare job creation with decades past and neglects to cover the impact of admitting over 1 million legal immigrants per year for decades.  Articles citing increases in housing starts using last years’ data neglects to cover more normal periods before 2008.  Articles comparing energy sources don’t mention the cost of coal and nuclear electricity generation at 2 cents per kwh being 5 times lower than solar and 7 times lower than wind.  The media is quick to act as the PR spin agent for special interests and liberal ideology.
The two biggest stories ignored by the “media” but widely published by conservative bloggers and authors this past decade were the debunking of the global warming hoax and UN Agenda 21 implementation in the U.S.  The biggest issue ignored by the “media” has been the explosion in federal spending and money printing since 2008.

U.S. Citizens are not aware of or prepared to face the consequences of their ignorance and inaction. They have been encouraged to live in a bubble.

Why I’m Voting ‘No’ on Syria

 by Sen. Rand Paul

If American interests are at stake, then our goal should not be stalemate

(Time) – I supported the decision to go to war with Afghanistan after our nation was attacked on 9/11. Colin Powell wrote in his autobiography: “War should be the politics of last resort. And when we go to war, we should have a purpose that our people understand and support.” I believe that he had it right. America should only go to war to win.
War should occur only when America is attacked, when it is threatened or when American interests are attacked or threatened. I don’t think the situation in Syria passes that test. Even the State Department argues that “there’s no military solution here that’s good for the Syrian people, and that the best path forward is a political solution.”

The U.S. should not fight a war to save face. I will not vote to send young men and women to sacrifice life and limb for stalemate. I will not vote to send our nation’s best and brightest to fight for anything less than victory. If American interests are at stake, then our goal should not be stalemate.
If American interests are at stake, then it is incumbent upon those advocating for military action to convince Congress and the American people of that threat. Too often, the debate begins and ends with an assertion that our national interest is at stake without any evidence of that assertion. The burden of proof lies with those who wish to engage in war.

Bashar Assad is clearly not an American ally. But does his ouster encourage stability in the Middle East, or would his ouster actually encourage instability?
Are the Islamic rebels our allies? Will they defend American interests? Will they acknowledge Israel’s right to exist? Will they impose Shari‘a? Will they tolerate Christians, or will they pillage and destroy ancient Christian churches and people?

The President and his Administration have not provided good answers to any of these questions. Those who seek military action have an obligation to publicly address these concerns before dragging our soldiers into another Middle Eastern war. Shooting first and aiming later has not worked for us in the past, and it should not be our game plan now.

In 2007, then Senator Obama stated that no President should unilaterally go to war without congressional authority unless there is an actual or imminent threat to our nation. James Madison argued this same position. Our Founding Fathers understood that the Executive Branch was the most prone to war. That is the constitutional position.
President Obama’s new position, though, is that while he requests congressional input, he doesn’t necessarily need Congress’s approval. The President and his Administration view this vote as a courtesy vote. Even though only 9% of the American population supports this intervention, according to a recent Reuters/Ipsos poll, and even if Congress votes against it, the President still believes that he reserves the right to involve our soldiers in another country’s civil war.

But Mr. President, that is not how our Constitution works.

Article 1, Section 8, Clause 11 gives Congress — and Congress alone — the power to declare war. If Congress does not approve this military action, the President must abide by that decision.

There is no debate more significant for a legislator than the decision to engage in war. We must hold our leaders accountable.

RLC: Vote No on Syria

REPUBLICAN LIBERTY CAUCUS OF TEXAS

STATEMENT TO THE TEXAS DELEGATION REGARDING SYRIA VOTE – September 5th, 2013

The Republican Liberty Caucus of Texas urges all members of the Texas congressional delegation to vote against any further use of force or intervention by United States forces in the conflict in Syria.  This is an internal conflict which does not meet the basic criteria necessary to justify United States intervention.
Since the founding of our nation and as expressed in the Constitution, the use of military force must be either in immediate response to a clear threat to our territory, our citizens or our vital interests, or on the approval of Congress with a declaration of war or equivalent statement.

This administration has consistently ignored and worked against due process in their domestic security policy and they continue to be hostile to the concept in their foreign policy, resisting calls for Congressional oversight.  The situation in Syria clearly does not meet the Constitutional standard for immediate reprisal in response to an attack on the United States.  The President cannot legally take military action unilaterally in this situation.  He must consult Congress and get their approval.

In the presentation to Congress of their case for an attack on Syria the Obama administration fell far short of proving that intervention is urgently needed or in our national interests.  Their evidence did not prove even the circumstances of the incident prompting their desire to intervene and they did not even make an effort to argue that there is any meaningful threat to the United States or reason for us to get involved beyond an irrational desire, guided by a misplaced sense of humanitarianism, to compulsively meddle in the affairs in other nations.
The use of sarin gas on a civilian population is reprehensible, but it should be addressed as a criminal act by international courts.  It is not our responsibility to act unilaterally merely on suspicion of wrongdoing without due process of law, especially when our actions would inevitably lead to the deaths of more innocents and an escalation of a conflict in which we have no real stake.

The members of  Republican Liberty Caucus chapters all over the state of Texas are unified in their belief that this proposed action in Syria represents a perversion of United States foreign policy and that it is essential that Congress reassert its authority as a coequal branch of government, restoring the balance of powers established by the Constitution.

For too long the leadership in Congress has neglected its oversight responsibilities and allowed the executive branch to assume authority to which it is not entitled.  A line needs to be drawn and this is the right place to draw it.

We demand that every member of our Congressional delegation stand strong and send a clear message to the White House that the authority of the Constitution is supreme and that the era of reckless interventionism and profligate use of our great military is over

Syria’s Gas War

America, Syria, and Russia: Opening the Gates of Hell

By Paul McGuire September 2, 2013 NewsWithViews.com
The whole world is reacting to President Obama’s decision for America to attack Syria over an alleged chemical attack because Assad’s forces had been accused of using chemical weapons several times in the last year, including the August 21st attack in the suburbs of Damascus. However, a number of news analysts such as Pat Buchanan and Ron Paul have called this a “False Flag” attack.

The Pentagon is moving a sixth warship armed with cruise missiles to the eastern Mediterranean Sea, giving the U.S. more firepower for a possible attack on Syria in response to alleged use of chemical weapons, a U.S. defense official said. According to reports, the guided-missile destroyer Stout will soon join four other missile-carrying U.S. destroyers within range of Syria. Each destroyer can carry up to 90 cruise missiles which have a range of nearly 1,000 miles. Whether they will acknowledge it in public or not, the international community and the United Nations look to the American Empire to supply its massive military force to solve international conflicts.

What is happening in Syria will not only affect America, Russia, Great Britain, China, Syria, Iran, and Israel. It will affect the entire world because Syria, controlling major oil assets off its coast, occupies a critical position in the global oil economy. It is possible for oil prices to go through the roof, and that would send a tsunami across the global economy. There have been reports put out by big banks like SocGen and Goldman Sachs that oil could soar to $150 a barrel if the Syrian conflict goes hot and draws in Russia and China.

According to an article by Steve Quayle in his, “V - The Guerrilla Economist Updates,” “The trouble for Syria began with two things. First the discovery of natural gas in the Mediterranean right off the coast of Syria, Lebanon and Israel. Read that list again, especially Lebanon and Syria. Is the picture becoming clearer? This discovery took place about a decade ago but the thing is that there already exists in the Middle East a Liquid Natural Gas Producing power house. This is the tiny nation of Qatar.”

Quayle continues, “Now here is where you need to put your thinking caps on. Qatar is floating in LNG (Liquid Natural Gas) it has over 77 Billion Tonnes in Reserve and that is with a moratorium in place. The problem is that Qatar would love to sell its LNG to the EU and the hot Mediterranean markets. The problem for Qatar in achieving this is their regional big brother Saudi Arabia. The Saudis have already said "NO" to an overland pipe cutting across the Land of Saud.” The Qatar / Syria region has vast reserves of natural gas. Russia has a deal with Syria that allows it to sell this Natural Gas and Oil to Europe.”

Russia now controls the oil coming out of Syria and being sold throughout Europe and China. However, there appears to be a battle for the control of that oil.

The Nabucco Agreement was signed by a handful of European nations and Turkey back in 2009. It was an agreement to run a natural gas pipeline across Turkey into Austria, bypassing Russia again with Qatar in the mix as a supplier to a feeder pipeline via the proposed Arab pipeline from Libya to Egypt to Nabucco (is the picture getting clearer?). The problem with all of this is that a Russian backed Syria stands in the way.

Qatar would love to sell its LNG to the EU and the hot Mediterranean markets. The problem for Qatar in achieving this is Saudi Arabia. The Saudis have already said "NO" to an overland pipe cutting across the Land of Saud. The only solution for Qatar if it wants to sell its oil is to cut a deal with the U.S.

Recently Exxon Mobile and Qatar Petroleum International have made a $10 Billion deal that allows Exxon Mobile to sell natural gas through a port in Texas to the UK and Mediterranean markets. Qatar stands to make a lot of money and the only thing standing in the way of their aspirations is Syria.

The US plays into this in that it has vast wells of natural gas, in fact the largest known supply in the world. There is a reason why natural gas prices have been suppressed for so long in the US. This is to set the stage for US involvement in the Natural Gas market in Europe while smashing the monopoly that the Russians have enjoyed for so long. What appears to be a conflict with Syria is really a conflict between the U.S. and Russia!

The main cities of turmoil and conflict in Syria right now are Damascus, Homs, and Aleppo. These are the same cities that the proposed gas pipelines happen to run through. Qatar is the biggest financier of the Syrian uprising, having spent over $3 billion so far on the conflict. The other side of the story is Saudi Arabia, which finances anti-Assad groups in Syria. The Saudis do not want to be marginalized by Qatar; thus they too want to topple Assad and implant their own puppet government, one that would sign off on a pipeline deal and charge Qatar for running their pipes through to Nabucco.

With the strong possibility of the strike from America happening, there is massive fear in the market and oil prices are surging. Now the end game is to cut Russia's lock on natural gas and oil that it supplies to Europe. If this connection is cut in any way, it will bring severe consequences to the Russian economy as well as Russia's natural gas company Gazprom.

There are two opposing factions in Syria. On one side you have the Qatari backed Muslim Brotherhood and its subsidiaries that have very close ties with the Emir of Qatar. On the other side you have the Saudi backed Wahhabi AL-Qaeda and its subsidiaries. These groups commit atrocities, like the cannibalism of the Wahabis and the "Brotherhood" slaughtering Christians.

What the international bankers are not telling the American people is that the U.S. economy is in reality crumbling and being propped up by the Federal Reserve printing money from nothing which they call Quantitive Easing. Using the pretense of spreading love and democracy throughout the Middle East, the U.S. has already seized control of six Arab nations.

For Russia, Syria is more than just the location of a strategic port in the gas rich Middle East; it is an essential strategic area. Russia is now forced to draw a very hard line in the sand lest they lose the entire European market to Middle Eastern and Caspian Energy interests. Syria is in the heart of Eurasia and historically, the empire that controls Eurasia controls the world. Russia cannot allow that; this is why they are putting their military assets in place. China, one of the world’s super powers, cannot have its natural gas flow interrupted as well, and China has sided with the Russians when it comes to Syria.

If Obama attacks Syria, some analysts believe Vladimir Putin is prepared to strike Saudi Arabia. This could stop the flow of oil from the Middle East. The United States government could go into a state of emergency and immediately restrict private access to fuel in this country in order to conserve the reserves inside of the United States! This would paralyze our economy. Grocery stores, major retail outlets, and pharmacies which operate on real time delivery principles would be virtually empty in matter of days. It is not inconceivable that banks would be closed and martial law established. Obviously, this is a worst case scenario.

Given the present sociological climate in the U.S. and the stirring up of potential race wars, it would not take much for chaos to take over. There are a lot of people who stand to benefit from this chaos or “manufactured crisis.”

Retiring DHS head Janet Napolitano made an ominous statement about a coming “cyber event.” A “cyber event” would shut down all commerce and communication on the internet. The point of all this is that this is not just about the U.S. invading Syria unilaterally. There is potential blowback from this that could be catastrophic! If you believe in prayer, now is the time to pray, as our Founding Fathers did. That means round the clock intercessory prayer, churches open all night for prayer, fasting, and a sense of intense spiritual urgency.

We are in grave danger!

Obama Impeachment Proposed

Black American citizens file “Articles of Impeachment” against Obama

August 13, 2013 by Dr. Richard Swier

NBRA Chairman Frances Rice, Esquire
The National Black Republican Association (NBRA) based in Sarasota, FL, headed by Chairman Frances Rice, filed Articles of Impeachment against President Barack Obama with the following language:

We, black American citizens, in order to free ourselves and our fellow citizens from governmental tyranny, do herewith submit these Articles of Impeachment to Congress for the removal of President Barack H. Obama, aka, Barry Soetoro, from office for his attack on liberty and commission of egregious acts of despotism that constitute high crimes and misdemeanors.

On July 4, 1776, the founders of our nation declared their independence from governmental tyranny and reaffirmed their faith in independence with the ratification of the Bill of Rights in 1791.  Asserting their right to break free from the tyranny of a nation that denied them the civil liberties that are our birthright, the founders declared:

“When a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariably the same Object evinces a design to reduce them under absolute Despotism, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such Government, and to provide new Guards for their future security.”  -  Declaration of Independence, July 4, 1776.
THE IMPEACHMENT POWER

Article II, Section IV of the United States Constitution provides: “The President, Vice President and all civil Officers of the United States, shall be removed from Office on Impeachment for, and Conviction of, Treason, Bribery, or other high Crimes and Misdemeanors.”

THE ARTICLES OF IMPEACHMENT
In his conduct of the office of President of the United States, Barack H. Obama, aka Barry Soetoro, personally and through his subordinates and agents, in violation or disregard of the constitutional rights of citizens and in violation of his constitutional duty to take care that the laws be faithfully executed, has prevented, obstructed, and impeded the administration of justice, in that:

ARTICLE 1
He has covered up, delayed, impeded and obstructed the investigation of the Benghazi Battle.

Specific conduct includes: (1) failing to adequately secure the US Consulate and the CIA annex in Benghazi; (2) failing to send a response team to rescue embattled US citizens in Benghazi; (3) lying to the American people about why the US Consulate and the CIA annex were attacked in Benghazi; and (3) hiding from the media and congressional investigators the Central Intelligence Agency personnel and other wounded US citizens who were on the ground in Benghazi by scattering them throughout the United States, forcing them to adopt new identities and subjecting them to monthly polygraph tests.

Benghazi Battle elements that are under investigation:
On September 11, 2012, the anniversary of the September 11, 2001, the US Consulate and the CIA annex in Benghazi, Libya was targeted in a premeditated, preplanned attack launched without warning by Islamist militants.

Footage of the attack broadcast in real time showed armed men attacking the consulate with rocket-propelled grenades, hand grenades, assault rifles, 14.5 mm anti-aircraft machine guns, truck mounted artillery, diesel canisters, and mortars.  It was not an act of savage mob violence, nor a spontaneous protest in response to an anti-Islamic video on YouTube.
In that attack, four American citizens were killed:  US Ambassador J. Christopher Stevens; Information Officer Sean Smith; and two embassy security personnel, Glen Doherty and Tyrone Woods, both former Navy SEALs.  Ambassador Stevens is the first U.S. ambassador killed in an attack since Adolph Dubs was killed in 1979.

ARTICLE 2
He has disclosed secret grand jury material by exposing the existence of a sealed indictment of one of the Benghazi attackers in violation of  Rule 6(e) of the Federal Rules of Criminal Procedure that clearly states: “… no person may disclose the indictment’s existence except as necessary to issue or execute a warrant or summons.’’

ARTICLE 3
He has authorized and permitted the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, a division of the Justice Department, to conduct Operation Fast and Furious, wherein guns were sold to Mexican drug trafficking organizations that were used to kill innocent Mexican civilians and two rifles sold to a smuggler in January 2010 ended up at the scene of the murder of U.S. Border Patrol Agent Brian Terry in December 2010.

ARTICLE 4
He has authorized and permitted confidential income tax returns information from the Internal Revenue Service to be provided to unauthorized individuals, organizations and agencies.

ARTICLE 5
He has caused investigations and audits to be initiated or conducted by the Internal Revenue Service in a discriminatory manner, including harassment and intimidation of conservative, evangelical and Tea Party groups applying for non-profit status between 2010 and 2012.

Elements of this illegal conduct include the facts that: (1) the head of the Internal Revenue Service tax-exempt organization division, Lois Lerner, admitted during a telephonic press event that illegal targeting occurred, then invoked her Fifth Amendment right and refused to answer questions before Congress about the targeting out of fear of self-incrimination; (2) two other career Internal Revenue Service employees stated that they acted at the behest of superiors in Washington — Carter Hull, a retired Internal Revenue Service Attorney and Elizabeth Hofacre, an employee of the Cincinnati IRS office which oversaw tax-exempt applications; and (3) Carter Hull stated that he was directed to forward the targeted applications to, among others, one of only two political appointees in the Internal Revenue Service Chief Counsel William Wilkins.

ARTICLE 6
He has (1) authorized and permitted the National Security Agency to conduct or continue electronic surveillance of over 300 million average Americans; (2) given access to National Security Agency surveillance data to other intelligence units within the Drug Enforcement Administration, the Secret Service, the Department of Defense and the Department of Homeland Security in violation of the law; and (3) conducted the surveillance of average Americans unconstrained by Congress, the United Supreme Court or the US Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court which has, to this date, functioned as a rubber stamp, having approved every request made of it in 2012 and rejecting only two of the 8,591 requests submitted between 2008 and 2012.

ARTICLE 7
He has authorized and permitted the Department of Justice to wiretap and secretly obtain two months of telephone and e-mail records of Fox News Reporter James Rosen and over one hundred Associated Press journalists.

ARTICLE 8
He has thwarted Congress by (1) failing to enforce all or parts of laws duly enacted by Congress, including the Defense of Marriage Act, the No Child Left Behind Act, and the Affordable Care Act; and (2) after Congress refused to pass his Dream Act, unilaterally issuing an executive order directing immigration officers to no longer deport an entire class of illegal immigrants who came here as children, regardless of individual circumstances, and to give them work-authorization permits.

ARTICLE 9
He has violated the Constitution when, on January 4, 2012, (1)  he bypassed the U. S. Senate to appoint three members of the National Labor Relations Board, actions that were ruled unconstitutional by the United States Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit which affirmed previous decisions by the Court of Appeal for the D.C. Circuit and the Third Circuit; and (2)  he bypassed the U. S. Senate to appoint Richard Cordray to head the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau.

ARTICLE 10
He has intimidated whistleblowers and brought twice as many prosecutions against whistleblowers as all prior presidents combined.  Egregiously, while refusing to prosecute anyone for actual torture, he prosecuted former Central Intelligence Agency employee John Kiriakou for disclosing the torture program.
Wherefore Barack H. Obama, aka Barry Soetoro, by such conduct, warrants impeachment and trial, and removal from office.

The Articles of Impeachment have been sent to President Obama, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, House Speaker Boehner, House Minority Leader Pelosi and the full Judiciary Committee of the US House of Representatives for action.

The Lost Charm of Syria

By Bill Evelyn on --  A Bad Case of Gas

Syria, the Fertile Crescent, is the birth place of humanity and civilization. During the ministry of St. Peter Christianity was introduced in Damascus. Syria is home to 21 million people and seven major political groups – Alawites, Sunnis, Christians, Kurds, Shia, Druze, and Arabs. Syria is a diverse and cultured society with world class universities.
The post World War II period was a renaissance for Syria economically. Syria’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) grew by 80% in the 1960′s and 336% in the 1970′s. Syria exports 650,000 barrels of oil per day and natural gas reservoirs are world class. Average per capita income as late as 2011 grew 3.68%, but in 2012 with civil war GDP has fallen 25%. Seventy thousand civilians have died in the fighting, oil and gas pipelines are being sabotaged by the rebels, and sanctions from the United States and the rest of the world are killing the Syrian economy. Syria has lost its charm.

Barack Hussein Obama campaigned for President in 2008 vowing to end wars in the Muslim world. He has resisted calls by Senators John McCain (R-AZ) and Lindsey Graham (R-SC) to intervene in Syria’s ever-more-bloody civil war. Most recently a purported gas attack in an eastern suburb of Damascus has raised the specter of intervention by the United States. The 1,000 or so suspected gas victims have raised the ire of Barack Hussein Obama, but curiously not the 70,000 victims who died by 7.62mm x 39 carbine rounds. Lest you be fooled again by King Obama, any attack on Syria will not be based on humanitarian reasons. He will intervene because Syria has a bad case of gas.

There are two teams in Syria vying for Liquid Natural Gas (LNG) shipments to Europe and China. Team A is the United States, Qatar, Iraq, Turkey, and Israel. They want to build an LNG pipeline from Qatar through Saudi Arabia and Iraq to the Turkish border. Team B is Iran, Iraq, Syria, Russia, Pakistan, and China. They want to build a pipeline from Iran to the Syrian Mediterranean coast (The Islamic Pipeline). Iran would also like to pump Syrian gas through Pakistan into China.
Syria, Israel, Lebanon, Palestinian Authority, and Cyprus share a claim of a recently discovered offshore natural gas reservoir (The Leviathan), which is estimated at 122 trillion cu ft (122 x 1012 cu ft) of available natural gas. Israel obviously wants to claim all of The Leviathan and sell that gas to Europe. Syria wants to claim all of The Leviathan and sell that gas to Europe, Pakistan, and China.

The world’s largest natural gas reservoir is shared by Qatar and Iran. The South Pars (500 x 1012 cu ft) natural gas reservoir has reserves of 500 trillion cu ft. The Iranians have invested heavily on LNG facilities and a pipeline through Pakistan over the past decade to sell this gas to Europe and China. The energy starved Chinese are said to have funded the hurried construction of the pipeline through Pakistan to their southern border and have agreed to rebuild damaged gas infrastructure if the al-Assad government beats the Syrian rebels. The Russian’s have inked deals to their benefit with The Islamic Pipeline and have stationed war ships in the Syrian ports of Tartus and Latakia to protect that investment. We installed a Shiite government in Iraq that is allied with Iran. In 2010 Iraq signed a Memorandum of Understanding to allow The Islamic Pipeline to cross its territory.
The opposing Team A is not keen on seeing its natural gas interests interfered with by The Islamic Pipeline. Turkey has always coveted the role of being the major bridge of oil and gas to the East and West, while Qatar wants to monopolize the South Pars reserves. The financial implications are enormous and it’s no wonder Team A and Team B will stop at nothing to win their gas war. Syria is the unlucky guy stuck in the middle seat between two guys with gas.

Syria has a huge population of rank-n-file Sunni Muslims. Sunni’s hate Alawite Arabs (A Sunni Sect) just a tad less than Shia Muslims and Zionist’s. Bashar al-Assad is the President of Syria and a member of the Alawite sect and leader of the Socialist Baath Party of Syria. The rebels are primarily Sunni from Saudi Arabia, Libya, Qatar, and Iraq which is a very convenient fact for Qatar and Saudi Arabia.
Qatar and Saudi Arabia are paying to arm the rebels, which contain elements of Al-Qaeda. Turkey is cooperating and allowing those weapons to cross the unpopulated Turkish Syrian border. The United States is threatening to intervene on behalf of the Al-Qaeda rebels with strategic strikes on Assad’s military forces. Russia, China, and Iran are warning of strikes on Israel if the United States intervenes. What a mess!

At the time this article was being sent for publication Barack Hussein Obama has indicated he is going to consult with Congress before intervening. Good idea since any intervention by Barack Hussein Obama will violate the Authorization to Use Military Force (AUMF) of 2001, the Constitution of 1789, and The War Powers Act of 1971.
The AUMF identified Al-Qaeda as the seditious organization on which the President was authorized to use military force. If Barack Hussein Obama bombs the al-Assad government it will be assisting Al-Qaeda in violation of the AUMF. He has no authority to initiate military force on the al-Assad government. A war without the express authorization or a Declaration of War by Congress will be in violation of Article 1, Section 8 of the United States Constitution. The Constitution states; “Congress shall have power to … declare War”. The President has no authority to start a war. The President does have authority by The War Powers Act of 1971 to use force if there is a direct threat to the United States. Within 60 days he must get Congress’ approval to continue that military force. Syria is no threat to the United States, so he can’t use The War Powers Act as a justification for intervention.

If Barack Hussein Obama bombs Syria and starts another war without Congressional approval, he should be immediately impeached for high crimes and misdemeanors. But this leads to a more profound question. Syria and the Middle East is a mess. Why do we want to help Al-Qaeda in Syria, while bombing Al-Qaeda in Yemen? These rebels are people who eat the organs of their vanquished enemies, kill Christians, and gas innocent women and children.
Why stick our nose in this stench?

Comments:
Great article Bill !  The U.S. and Canada are sitting on a mother-load of natural gas under the oil fields.  We should be using our resources to build refrigerated Liquid Natural Gas exporting facilities, so we can export natural gas to Europe. If piping it as a gas is the most cost-effective solution, at the very least, we can supply all of North and South America.
