I suspect that the countries whose students are scoring higher than US students have not abandoned teaching to the test. The US has strayed away from teaching relevant occupational courses in favor of easier less relevant courses aimed at indoctrination to leftist agendas..
In the US we had already ruined our K-12 students with gender-neutral titles, new math, common core, sex education, community activism for “social justice” and inadequate reading, math and science teaching. The US then offered college courses that didn’t require math or science. Students also learned to be “snowflakes” complaining of micro-aggressions. The political indoctrination had begun. Colleges poured $billions into fancy campus expansions to attract unprepared students and costs doubled annually.
Graduates with BS degrees in
political science, gender studies, African studies, ethnography, applied
linguistics, art education, art history, jazz studies, musical instrument
studies, sociology, Asian studies, ceramics, disruptive innovation,
communications, creative writing, deaf studies, drawing and painting, education
informatics, event management, exercise science, film and media studies may
find it unlikely that these degrees will lead to gainful employment. (source: Georgia State University).
