US Tariffs on China 5-3-25

In April 2025, the US has taken several actions regarding tariffs on China, including increasing existing tariffs and implementing new ones. These actions involve both reciprocal tariffs, where the US increases duties on Chinese goods in response to China's retaliatory measures, and changes to the de minimis exemption.

Increased Reciprocal Tariffs:

On April 8, 2025, President Trump issued an executive order increasing reciprocal tariffs on imports from China from 34% to 84%. This increase is a response to China's retaliatory tariffs on US goods. 

Increased Duties on Low-Value Imports:

The US also revised the duties on low-value imports from China, especially those sent through the postal system. The ad valorem duty for postal items was increased, and the per-item duty was also increased.  

De Minimis Exemption Changes:

The US revoked the de minimis exemption for goods from China, meaning that low-value imports that would previously have been exempt from duties are now subject to all applicable duties. This change is intended to address the synthetic opioid crisis. 

Individualized Reciprocal Tariffs:

The US implemented a system of individualized reciprocal tariffs on the countries with the largest trade deficits with the US.

The US is imposing a 10% baseline tariff on all countries, with higher individualized tariffs on those with the largest trade deficits.
