US Trade with EU Members 6-24-25

Individual EU member countries cannot make separate trade deals with the US. The European Union handles trade negotiations and agreements on behalf of all its member states. The EU has exclusive competence to conclude trade agreements, meaning it negotiates and manages trade deals for the entire bloc, according to Wikipedia

Here's why and how:

Exclusive Competence: The EU treaties grant the EU the exclusive power to negotiate and conclude trade agreements with third countries.

One Voice for the EU: By negotiating as a bloc, the EU aims to have a stronger position in international trade negotiations and to present a unified front.

EU Trade Deals: The EU has concluded numerous free trade agreements (FTAs) with countries worldwide.

Member State Involvement: While the EU negotiates, member states are involved in the process. They approve negotiating mandates, are regularly briefed on progress, and ultimately decide on signing and concluding the agreements.

No Individual Deals: This system prevents individual member states from making separate trade deals with the US or other countries, ensuring a consistent EU trade policy.

Trade policy and agreements: The EU is responsible for the trade policy of the member countries and negotiates agreements for them.

The British Pound

The United Kingdom chose not to adopt the euro in the 1990s, reaffirming the pound's symbol of British sovereignty. The UK withdrew from the EU in 2020..

The value of the British Pound is $1.35.

Reserve currency: The pound sterling is one of the world’s leading reserve currencies. This means that many governments and institutions hold large amounts of pounds as part of their foreign exchange reserves. The stability and liquidity of the pound make it a safe choice for storing value, which in turn supports its use in international trade and finance.
