Presidential candidate and Texas
Sen. Ted Cruz was firing with both barrels at his own party’s establishment
Sunday during an interview with NBC’s Chuck Todd that aired on Sunday’s “Meet
the Press.”
During the wide-ranging interview,
Cruz leveled shots at the Republican congressional leadership he’s built
a presidential campaign criticizing, saying they have “passed more
Democratic priorities than (Democratic leader) Sen. Harry Reid ever could.”
Cruz declared, “Why do you think
Rep. John Boehner is stepping down? He’s stepping down because the
American people are furious with Republican leaders that don’t do what they
promised.”
The senator went on to describe the
town halls he often takes part in on the campaign trail, and how voters
criticize the Republican leadership for accomplishing “absolutely nothing.”
Cruz continued, “And usually I
respond and say, ‘you know what? It’s worse than that. It could have been
better if it were nothing.’”
“In fact, what the Republican
majorities have done, we came back right after the last election, passed a
trillion dollar bill filled with corporate welfare. Then Republican leadership
joined with Harry Reid and the Democrats to do that,” Cruz said. “Then
leadership voted to fund Obamacare. Then they voted to fund amnesty. Then they
voted to fund Planned Parenthood, then Republican leadership took the lead
confirming Loretta Lynch as attorney general.”
Cruz asked rhetorically, “Which one
of those decisions is one iota different than what would have happened under
Harry Reid and the Democrats?”
That is when Cruz utterly devastated
the GOP leadership by proclaiming, “The truth of the matter is, Republican
leadership are the most effective Democrat leaders we’ve ever seen.
They’ve passed more Democratic priorities than Harry Reid ever could.”
Sadly, the Texas senator is
absolutely correct, in that the GOP elite leadership has done virtually nothing
on behalf of the base of their party and have failed to live up to the
expectations and promises that put them in the leadership position in the first
place.
Both Senate Majority
Leader Mitch McConnell and soon-to-be former Speaker of the House
John Boehner have in essence acted as Democrats “Lite,” acquiescing to most of
the agenda and demands put forth by President Obama and the congressional
Democrat leadership.

The 30-minute interview is here. The
devastating quote comes about the 5:30 mark.
