Mayor
Denis Shortal conducted a town hall meeting 9/16/16 and covered all major
issues very well. The meeting was well attended. Feelings ran high in reaction
to the City Council vote to tear down the theater at Brook Run Park
The City
Council had just voted 6 to 1 to begin demolition. Mayor Shortal was the one No vote on this
issue. This was the issue of the evening
as Danny Ross and other proponents of saving the theater made their case. But they were preaching to the choir.
This was
a good example of when members of the Dunwoody leadership clique disagreed. The
segment of the leadership who prevailed were those who want everything “new”
and “expensive”. The “big spenders” are not a large group, but 6 Councilmembers
voted with the “big spenders” on this issue.
This
theater was a good candidate for historic preservation and we have a solid
group in the Dunwoody Preservation Trust.
The City Council vote to demolish the building now was probably a
mistake. I think the theater could have
been restored as a “historic theater”. I
also think that most Dunwoody voters would have voted to delay the tear-down.

Leahy, Dunwoody GA Tea Party Leader
