Flu cases 2019-2020 include Regular Flu A&B
plus Coronavirus 19. I expect cases and deaths from A&B to be triple the
number of cases and deaths from Covid19.
Flu Cases Deaths
Influenza A&B 3-5 million 290-650 thousand est.
Coronavirus 19 1 million
100 thousand est.
The influenza pandemic
1917-1918 was the worst viral infection in world history. Globally, 500
million, one third of the population, were infected and 50 million died. In the US, 675 thousand were infected.
Coronavirus19 2019-2020
is equally contagious and deadly, but we now have the ability to control its
spread and affect recovery. Globally, 500 thousand are infected, over 20
thousand have died and 120 thousand have recovered. In the US, 70 thousand are infected and over
1 thousand have died.
Regular Flu, Influenza A&B,
2019-2020 is estimated to produce 3-5 million cases and 290-650 thousand
deaths.
The COV19 Flu is a viral infection. It is more
contagious and more deadly than Influenza A&B, the “regular flu” that
appears each year in the Fall and Winter and retreats in the Spring and Summer.
The “regular flu” affects 30 million to 60 million in the US each year
producing deaths of 20,000 to 50,000 each year.
The COV19 virus has entered the fray and has already added 20,000 deaths.
This year’s combined Flu Festival is likely to kill over 100,000.
The typical treatment for the Flu is anti-biotics
and steroids, but the treatment for the COV19 virus is being augmented by
Hydroxychloroquine and
other drugs. Mylan is increasing production
in its West Virginia manufacturing plant to produce 50 million
Hydroxychloroquine tablets for 1.5 million patients.
The panic over adding COV19 to this flu season is
informed by past history and current information about COV19. The panic has
caused us to focus on how to avoid contact with COV19 and it’s the same
approach we need to continue to use from here on out to avoid the “regular
flu”.
Our worst influenza pandemic occurred from 1917
to 1919, before we had invented the electron microscope and couldn’t even see
viruses. We treated this influenza like
it was a bacteria, we failed and it ran its course.
When the 1918-1919 pandemic ended, doctors
drafted the rules of “social distancing” and “hand sanitation”. When COV19 hit the US this was our only sure
defense against it spreading.
We had invented penicillin in 1928 and deployed
it in 1940.
This allowed the development of anti-biotics, but
our “flu seasons” continued. See article below.
The 1918 influenza pandemic was the most severe
pandemic in recent history. It was caused by an H1N1 virus with genes of avian
origin. Although there is not universal consensus regarding where the virus
originated, it spread worldwide during 1918-1919. In the United States,
it was first identified in military personnel in spring 1918. It is estimated
that about 500 million people or one-third of the world’s population became
infected with this virus. The number of deaths was estimated to be at least 50
million worldwide with about 675,000 cases occurring in the United States.
Mortality was high in people younger than 5 years
old, 20-40 years old, and 65 years and older. The high mortality in healthy
people, including those in the 20-40 year age group, was a unique feature of
this pandemic. While the 1918 H1N1 virus has been synthesized and evaluated, the properties that made it so devastating are not well understood.
With no vaccine to protect against influenza infection and no antibiotics to
treat secondary bacterial infections that can be associated with influenza
infections, control efforts worldwide were limited to non-pharmaceutical interventions such as isolation, quarantine, good personal hygiene, use of
disinfectants, and limitations of public gatherings, which were applied
unevenly.
