The
NASDAQ spiked along with the Dow and the S&P 500.
The
NASDAQ Stock Exchange was created in 1971. Technology companies moving from
start-ups and needing investment income chose to become public companies. Since
then, non-tech companies have populated the NASDAQ to include retail, travel,
auto, airlines, travel and services. There are 3300 companies listed on the
NASDAQ. The average is lower than the Dow, because most of these companies have
lower stock prices.
The
NASDAQ has gained more notoriety and visibility lately with large gains in
2017, 2019 and 2020. The gains come primarily from internet retail, internet
advertising, pharmaceuticals and healthcare.
The
NASDAQ fluctuations between 8500 and 9500 are due to coronavirus disruptions.
The NASDAQ closed on 12/31/19 at 8972.61 and closed on 2/28/20 at 8567.37. The
lose is 405.24. The spike to 9817.18 was
a fluke.
