Psychotic Disorders 4-23-25

Psychotic disorders are mental health conditions characterized by delusionshallucinations, and/or disorganized thinking and behavior. Common examples include schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorder, schizophreniform disorder, delusional disorder, and brief psychotic disorder. Additionally, psychosis can be induced by certain substances or medical conditions. Here's a more detailed look at some specific types of psychotic disorders:

Schizophrenia Spectrum and Other Psychotic Disorders:

Schizophrenia: Characterized by persistent and severe symptoms, including delusions, hallucinations, disorganized thought and speech, and negative symptoms (e.g., reduced emotional expression, apathy).

Schizoaffective Disorder: Involves symptoms of both schizophrenia and a mood disorder (like depression or bipolar disorder).

Schizophreniform Disorder: Similar to schizophrenia, but the symptoms last less than six months.

Delusional Disorder: Characterized by the presence of one or more persistent delusions that are not bizarre.

Brief Psychotic Disorder: Symptoms of psychosis last less than one month, often triggered by a major stressor.

Substance/Medication-Induced Psychotic Disorder: Psychotic symptoms caused by the use of drugs, alcohol, or certain medications.

Psychotic Disorder Due to Another Medical Condition: Psychotic symptoms caused by a physical illness or injury.

Shared Psychotic Disorder (formerly known as folie à deux): A delusion is shared between two individuals who have a close relationship.

Other Related Conditions:

Bipolar Disorder: Can involve psychotic symptoms during manic or depressive episodes.

Severe Depression: Some individuals with severe depression may experience psychotic symptoms.

Postpartum Psychosis: Can occur shortly after childbirth, primarily associated with maternal bipolar disorder.

Note: The DSM-5 (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders) is the standard for diagnosing mental disorders, including psychotic disorders.
