Planned Parenthood Unregulated

No HHS oversight of Planned Parenthood! 10/10/15, Liberty Council Action

Shocking revelation in a Christian group's investigation of PPH: In the past 8 years, the Department of Health and Human Services has doled out billions of our taxpayer dollars to Planned Parenthood with ZERO oversight.

Thankfully, all of that is about to change. In their most recent annual report, Planned Parenthood (PPH) revealed an annual revenue of $1.3 billion. Further, they reported holding $1.4 billion in assets during 2013-2014. Of those monies, they reportedly received over $500 million of taxpayer dollars - as funded by the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS).

Unbelievably, as The Stream uncovered through a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request, HHS has "conducted zero oversight since 2007," while PPH labels their trafficking of aborted babies' body parts as "research."

"Under the NIH Revitalization Act of 1993, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) should be performing audits on Planned Parenthood, since Planned Parenthood is involved in research on aborted fetuses and HHS is supporting its work with funding. Specifically,
according to HHS's own documents, 'Section 498A of the Public Health Service Act [42 USC 289g-1] requires the annual submission to Congress of a report describing research involving therapeutic transplantation of human fetal tissue supported or conducted by the NIH.'

In the fourth undercover video released by the Center for Medical Progress, Dr. Savita Ginde, a Planned Parenthood abortion doctor in Colorado, revealed that the organization's fetal harvesting is categorized as research, explaining, 'Putting it under the research gives us a little bit of a...a little sort of an overhang over the whole thing.'

Despite the terms of Section 498A of the Public Health Service Act, the audits are apparently not taking place."

It is unconscionable that a government agency would break the law and allocate that level of funding to a private organization with zero oversight or reporting!

The House is finally coming down on Planned Parenthood!
On Wednesday, the House of Representatives launched a special committee to investigate Planned Parenthood and their alleged involvement of the trafficking of the body parts of aborted babies.

As reported by The Hill: "The four-page bill does not mention Planned Parenthood by name. Instead, it charges the committee to investigate "fetal tissue procurement," "federal funding and support for abortion providers" and "born-alive" abortions, generally.

But Republicans were clear that the committee's work is intended to deepen three existing House committee probes into Planned Parenthood, which began in early August. The committees have held three hearings as part of their investigations, which has prompted Planned Parenthood to
turn over at least 20,000 documents, according to Democrats.

'Our investigation has raised many more questions than we've been able to find answers,' said Rep. Marsha Blackburn (R-Tenn.), who is expected to lead the panel. 'We need to have a national conversation about these practices. This is a discussion we cannot shy away from.'"

This level of investigation is what we have been calling for
since the very first videos were released by the Center for Medical Progress in July. Now, we also have confirmation that the House Budget Committee is considering a reconciliation bill to defund Planned Parenthood!

When the defunding bill emerges from the House committee, we will certainly petition the House for the bill's passage. But for now, we are keeping the pressure on fence-sitting Senators who could potentially keep the bill from making it to the President's desk.

Of course, PPH's leadership and other radicals will not give up without an intense fight. In fact, Democrats who opposed the investigation into PPH are the very ones calling for an investigation into the Center for Medical Progress, the producers of the ten undercover videos.
