President Barack Obama’s plan to import
thousands of Muslims into select cities around the U.S. was exposed last week,
prompting Gowdy to sent a letter to the Secretary of State John Kerry demanding
answers concerning reports of several refugees from places like Syria and North
Africa being moved to his home state.
As chairman of the House Judiciary
Subcommittee responsible for the refugee resettlement program administered by
the State Department, one would expect Gowdy to be kept in the loop about plans
to import refugees to America — let alone his own state.
However, he claims in the letter to Kerry
that he was completely unaware about the plan to resettle refugees in South
Carolina.
“As the Member of the U.S. House of
Representatives representing the Spartanburg area, I am deeply concerned about
the lack of notice, information, and consultation afforded to me and my
constituents about this issue,” the letter read.
According to Ann Corcoran, author of the
Refugee Resettlement Watch blog, Gowdy is the first member of Congress to raise
questions about this program since she began her battle eight years ago to
expose the false claims and lack of oversight of the program.
However, Corcoran says he needs to go a step
further and demand answers concerning the program and how it effects not just
South Carolina, but all 50 states.
“Maybe due to Gowdy’s swift and decisive
action, other communities, which are being kept in the dark, will get some
relief,” Corcoran said. “This is the first time I’ve ever seen anyone in
Congress do this. Trey Gowdy has directed a letter to John Kerry asking all the
right questions.”
Included in Gowdy’s letter were questions
about how Spartanburg was chosen for refugee resettlement, when the refugees
will arrive, how many people are expected and from what countries, as well as
what government services will be provided to them at what cost
This program, which has quietly been in
operation for over 25 years, came to the forefront of controversy when in
February one of the FBI’s top counter-terrorism officials, Michael Steinbach,
testified in front of the House Homeland Security committee saying the U.S. has
no effective means by which to screen refugees for possible links to the
Islamic State group or other terror organizations.
Texas Republican Rep. Michael McCaul also
sent a letter to the White House in January where he cited “serious national
security concerns” about the Syrian refugee program and urged Obama to not
provide a “back door for jihadists,” according to WND.
For years now the U.S. has been receiving
over 70,000 of these refugees per year into its borders, placing them in houses
and schools and providing not only free healthcare but also a fast track to
full citizenship.
It’s about time the people’s representatives
in Congress were brought into the loop.
