National Guard in Chicago 10-12-25

Members of the National Guard have already arrived in the Chicago area as of October 8, 2025, following an order by President Donald Trump. The deployment has faced significant opposition and legal challenges from Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker and Chicago officials.

Details on the deployment:

  • Purpose: The troops were federalized by President Trump, reportedly to protect federal personnel and property, including facilities for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). This occurred amid heightened tensions related to immigration enforcement and protests.
  • Composition: Approximately 500 National Guard members were deployed to an Army reserve base in Elwood, a suburb southwest of Chicago. This includes about 200 troops from the Texas National Guard and 300 from the Illinois National Guard.
  • Duration: The initial mobilization is for 60 days, though this could be extended.
  • Local Opposition: Both Governor Pritzker and Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson have spoken out against the deployment, with Pritzker calling it an "invasion" and an "authoritarian march". They have filed a lawsuit to block the federalization of troops in their state.
  • Legal Challenge: A federal judge in Illinois is currently hearing arguments on the lawsuit filed by the state and city.
  • Federal Justification: The Trump administration has justified the deployment by claiming a need to combat "lawlessness" and protect federal assets, despite crime statistics showing overall drops in the city.
