US Election Integrity 8-5-24

Election integrity is up in the air for 2024.

US elections are controlled by State Law and administered by County Election Commissions. If Republicans are elected in 2024, they will pass federal laws requiring voters in federal elections to be US Citizens. This could also require that the number of House seats are tied to populations of US citizens.

The risks of losing US election integrity include the issuance of drivers licenses and Democrat controlled State Legislatures. As of January 2024, there are 27 states with a Republican governor and 23 states with a Democratic governor.

As of early 2024, a total of 19 states plus the District of Columbia and Commonwealth of Puerto Rico allow undocumented immigrants to obtain a driver’s license. These states include:

  • California
  • Colorado
  • Connecticut
  • Delaware
  • Hawaii
  • Illinois
  • Maryland
  • Massachusetts
  • Minnesota
  • Nevada
  • New Jersey
  • New Mexico
  • New York
  • Oregon
  • Rhode Island
  • Utah
  • Vermont
  • Virginia, and
  • Washington.

While some other states are considering passing similar laws, others have gone in the other direction. Florida, for example, passed a law forbidding acceptance of certain other states' drivers' licenses issued to undocumented persons.

The typical state requirements to obtain such a license include that the applicant provide proof of identity and proof of state residency.

This leaves 31 States with Drivers License rules that vary. Georgia issues drivers licenses to those who have legal status and proof of residency. This can be a green card or H1b visa. These are non-citizens.

We were allowed to use our US Drivers License to rent a car in Germany to conduct business. Florida and Georgia allow this for tourists.

Election Integrity is measured by issuing scores for Voter ID, Voter List Accuracy and Absentee Balot Management. Tennessee ranks 1st and other southern and republican controlled states rank high. Hawaii ranks last and other democrat controlled states rank low.

Voting Machines will require careful monitoring to ensure that they have reliable secure software and have not been hacked. If delays in receiving vote data are avoided, the returns will be announced on time. These could be announced as “preliminary” counts, subject to verification.

Besides adding more Republicans to monitor election offices, the vote will probably be controlled by the machines. This will require larger than normal Republican votes to give Trump enough electoral votes to win.
