Autism 7-20-25

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is characterized by difficulties with social interaction and communication, alongside restricted and repetitive behaviors. Symptoms can vary widely in presentation and severity, but some common signs include delayed language skills, unusual sensory sensitivities, and repetitive movements.

Social Communication and Interaction:

Difficulty with social interaction: This can manifest as challenges making eye contact, understanding social cues, or engaging in back-and-forth conversations.

Delayed language skills: Some individuals with ASD may have limited or delayed speech development, or may struggle with understanding and using language effectively.

Nonverbal communications challenges: Difficulty understanding or using body language, facial expressions, and gestures can also be present.

Limited social or emotional reciprocity: This can include difficulty sharing interests, emotions, or experiences with others.

Restricted and Repetitive Behaviors and Interests:

·       Repetitive movements or behaviors:

This can include actions like hand-flapping, rocking, spinning, or repeating words or phrases.

·       Intense or narrow interests:

Individuals may have a strong focus on specific topics or activities, sometimes to the exclusion of other interests.

·       Resistance to change:

Individuals with ASD may become upset or distressed by changes in routine or environment.

·       Sensory sensitivities:

Some individuals may be overly sensitive to sensory input like light, sound, or touch, while others may be under-sensitive.

·       Unusual eating and sleeping habits:

These can include specific food preferences, difficulty with transitioning to sleep, or unusual sleep patterns.

·       Gastrointestinal issues:

Some individuals with ASD may experience digestive problems.

Other Possible Symptoms:

·       Anxiety and irritability: These can be common co-occurring conditions with ASD.

·       Hyperactivity, impulsivity, or inattentiveness: These can sometimes be associated with ASD, or may indicate co-occurring ADHD.

·       Epilepsy or seizure disorders: These can also be present in some individuals with ASD.

It's important to remember that the presentation of autism is highly individualized, and not everyone with ASD will experience all of these symptoms. Early diagnosis and intervention can significantly improve outcomes for individuals with ASD.

What are the symptoms of autism ?

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a developmental disability that affects how a person communicates and interacts with others, learns, and behaves

Symptoms of ASD typically appear in early childhood and can vary widely in severity.

Common symptoms of ASD fall into two main categories: social communication and interaction challenges, and restricted and repetitive behaviors or interests.

Efforts to determine the causes of Autism are underway. It appears to be a segmentation and renaming of what was called “Retardation” except for “high functioning autism”. We saw this in the movie “The Rain Man”.
