Oh Facebook

The smart phone capabilities to function as a camera and camcorder allowed Facebook to serve as a real-time family picture album. Facebook also allows Facebook groups to establish Facebook Pages that operate like websites.

Now Facebook is under attack. See below:

Facebook is under fire and may face fines — again — for potentially mishandling users’ data, Tony Romm, 6/4/18.

Missouri launches investigation into Google’s handling of consumer data, Hamza Shaban, 11/13/17.

Facebook’s arrangements with Amazon.com, Apple, BlackBerry and Samsung allowing their devices to access data from the social network’s users could further expose Facebook to steep fines and other penalties, experts said.
The practice — which may have occurred without users’ full knowledge — drew sharp rebukes Monday from lawmakers who said Facebook has misled them about the way it collects and swaps consumers’ data. And it could spark additional scrutiny from the Federal Trade Commission, which is already investigating Facebook for recent privacy mishaps.

I have no dog in the fight with Facebook. I don’t post, I just see family photos and Facebook Group posts from my desktop PC. I don’t have a smart phone. I don’t “twitter”. I don’t use “social media”.

Oh Google!

The Google algorithm spies on what we access on the internet and directs ads to us based on what we access.
This was announced as an advantage, but is actually annoying. See below:

Missouri’s attorney general said Monday that he has launched an investigation into whether Google has mishandled private customer data and manipulated its search results to favor its own products, a further sign that Silicon Valley’s political fortunes may be on the descent.
The probe comes after European antitrust regulators levied a $2.7 billion fine against Google in June and as Washington is taking a harder look into the influence of dominant tech companies in American society.

Attorney General Josh Hawley said that the investigation will focus on three issues: the scope of Google's data collection, whether it has abused its market position as a dominant search engine and whether the company used its competitors content as its own in search results. The state has issued Google a subpoena seeking information about its business practices.

I have a PC and use Google to research facts for this Blog.
