Oil and natural gas
pipeline construction increased sharply in 2017 and continues through 2018.
There are lists of projects ranging from 4 mile links to 400 mile pipelines in
process.
Transportation costs
for oil and natural gas are much lower with pipelines. The US is already a net exporter of liquid
natural gas and has increased oil production 40% since 2017. The US consumes
20,000 million bpd. of oil each year and up until 2016, the US produced less
than 10,000 million bpd. and imported the other 10,000 million bpd.
The US is projected to
increase production to 12,000 million bpd in 2019.
We are playing catch
up on pipelines even though we knew that fracking would allow the US to become
energy independent in 2015. Pipeline miles achieved by year are below:
2018 – 195.9 miles as
of 4/27/18
2017 - 1520 miles
2016 – 44.3 miles
2015 – 462.4 miles
Currently, freight
train and 18 wheel trucks are filling in the transportation gap. The US will
continue to build needed pipelines over the next few years and will continue to
increase oil production to match US consumption. Both of these efforts will
result in stabile gasoline, oil and natural gas prices and will add to US
exports.
